Has anyone ordered the David Pogue's Book and received the PDF file? I have been told twice from Amazon.com that the link will be emailed, and still no link has appeared. Has anyone received the PDF file?

Did you check your spam or trash folders? Sometimes stuff from Amazon is flagged as spam.

Their servers crashed. Email O'Reilly and they'll send you the new link.

They have had numerous server overloads due to the overwhelming demand. I was finally able to get the .pdf file downloaded the other night in the "wee" hours. It contains over 300 pages of everything you could want to know. It really is the "missing manual" that should have been enclosed with the iPhone. :)

Is there really anything in the book that has not been discussed here?

I mean, I looked through the Table of Contents and didn't see a thing that the forum has not covered [often times in many duplicate threads :)].

For those of you who have already received the .PDF file, your insights would be much appreciated.

Did you buy it from amazon.com ($13.59) or from the oreilly web site?

I just ordered it from Amazon but I have a question. Do you get the pdf file by simply hitting the "pre-order" button at the top? I re-read the description where it says hit the "add bundle to cart" button but I did not see that.

I see on the O'Reilly publisher's site the "add bundle to cart" option. But it's $24.99 (not $13 as from Amazon). Any help would be appreciated.

amazon.com copied the text from the o'reilly web site. Amazon.com told me that they would NOT be honoring what was posted in the description. Would you like to share the file since I have also ordered the book?

That sure is unprofessional on Amazon's part. They need to be more careful when they cut and paste from other websites. I guess it's a mistake? Did you order from O'Reilly in order to get the PDF? Or was Amazon initially honoring it then changed their mind about it?

I ordered from amazon.com because the price was cheaper. If you look at the website, it states that you can get the file immediately. They seem not to want to honor that statement.

I called them and I got put on hold for 15 minutes. Then the guy came on and told me it was "an emerging issue" and that I'd receive an email in 2-3 days. I'm sure the email will simply state that it was a mistake and they will not honor it. At that point I will probably cancel my order.

Apple has a very good users manual PDF on their website. Is there any info in the Pogue book that isn't in the Apple PDF?

I agree. I am still waiting for someone to step up and tell me why anyone should shell out $20+ bucks for an elongated iPhone manual. With a resource as great and as vast as the internet, what could the author be offering in this 300+ page book that one has not stumbled upon in this or any other public (and FREE) forum.

If the Apple PDF had all of the iPhone answers, then why are people asking questions in forums? Until I get my PDF, I can't say whay one may learn from this book. As a programmar, I always have leaned more from 3rd party books then from the ones provided wth the software.

Some people don't bother to read manuals at all.

I suspect most don't read them--and that's when the manuals are included in the box.

As for Pogue's book, I cannot imagine it will have anything even remotely as comprehensive as what is found here. No way is it going to discuss mods, hacking, etc., in much detail, if at all.

I would like to know how long he had an iPhone. And how much time he had to spend writing about it, compared to everything else he does, including making cheesy iPhone vids (OK I found myself singing that once--you got me). I suspect he knocked it out in a weekend or two... not something I'd pay for, but I'll reserve final judgment till after those who've read it report about it.

His book is directed at users, not modders. At least one of his tips has been included in this forum and 2 of his videos are available on youTube. He is a writer for the New York times, with a good sense of humor. Maybe not everyone on this forum is as smart as you appear to be!
