Detailed tutorial on updating the OS? Please recommend.

I have been putting off updating to the current OS due to the disastrous consequences of doing this in the past. I need to find a very basic, step by step tutorial on how to udpate the OS Without losing an contacts, calendar appointments, data, or pics?

Here is Apples update page. As far as saving everything, In itune you want to make sure everything you want to save is set to sync. I will look to see if I can find a step by step on that. Maybe there is a video on YouTube.
