Looks like a 3rd party has cracked it - Exchange Integration Delivered at last!

I received this update this morning, looks like they run the link to your exchange, you don't have to install any software on iPhone or Exchange server - suspect you'll pay a monthly fee:

Synchronica Launches Free Trial - Delivering Microsoft Exchange Email to the iPhone

Mobile Gateway Breaks Barrier for Business Users of Apple's iPhone Enabling Seamless Integration with Corporate Email

Royal Tunbridge Wells, August 2, 2007. - Synchronica today announced a free trial of its Mobile Gateway 3.0, providing mobile synchronization between Microsoft Exchange and the native email client of the iPhone. Owners of the Apple smartphone can now try Mobile Gateway free of charge to send and receive corporate email using their iPhones - without having to install any software on the device or behind the corporate firewall.

Until now, owners of Apple's ground-breaking smartphone have been largely locked out of corporate mail systems, because the built-in email client of the iPhone only supports Microsoft Exchange via direct IMAP/SMTP connections - a feature which is often blocked by corporate firewalls due to security concerns.

Synchronica now provides a secure gateway in the corporate environment using Microsoft's Outlook Web Access (OWA) to retrieve email from the Exchange server, a service enabled by many enterprises to provide users with access to corporate email from home or while traveling.

Mobile Gateway is a perfect companion to Apple's iTunes application. While iTunes synchronizes calendar and contacts with Microsoft Outlook, Mobile Gateway keeps iPhone users connected to their corporate email once they have left the office. It provides tight integration between the iPhone and Microsoft Exchange and automatically delivers emails to the built-in email application of the iPhone, including support for folders and attachments.

Replies and new messages are relayed back to the corporate Exchange server and appear in the 'Sent Items' folder in Outlook when the user comes back to the office – no need for the cumbersome copy-to-self workaround.

Signing up for the service is easy and straightforward. Thanks to Mobile Gateway's unique zero footprint architecture, users simply register their iPhones with Synchronica's Mobile Gateway and can start to send and receive wireless email immediately - no software to be installed on the device and no connectors or redirectors to be installed in the corporate network.

Early adopters of the Apple iPhone interested in a test drive of Mobile Gateway 3.0 can visit www.synchronica.com to sign up for the free 60-day trial starting today. After the trial period, Synchronica intends to announce migration options to a commercially supported solution including offerings through service providers.

Commenting on the launch of the free trial, Carsten Brinkschulte, CEO of Synchronica, said, "Mobile Gateway has the unique advantage that it does not require firewall modification or any software to be installed in the corporate network. So this won't cause any headaches for IT managers when their executives bring their iPhones into the office and ask them to get corporate email on their latest gadget. Other vendors are claiming support for Microsoft Exchange synchronization with the Apple iPhone, but most are still developing their service and use cumbersome redirectors or even plan to offer browser-based access to corporate email. We are the only company that can offer this service straightaway with zero footprint and fully integrated with the built-in email client of the iPhone."

Mobile Gateway is operated on the 'edge' of the network, offered by a service provider as a hosted service or deployed in the demilitarized zone (DMZ) of the corporate network. Data is protected during synchronization by encrypted IMAP/SMTP connections to the iPhone and secure HTTPS connections to Microsoft Exchange. Mobile Gateway provides an IMAP/SMTP proxy for the iPhone, relaying into WebDAV requests - the same protocol used by Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA).

The iPhone is just the latest device supported by Synchronica's Mobile Gateway middleware, which enables mobile synchronization with a wide range of smartphones and mass market feature phones from Nokia, Sony Ericsson, and other leading manufacturers. Mobile Gateway is based entirely on open industry standards, including IMAP (LEMONADE) for push email and SyncML (OMA DS) for synchronization of calendar and contact data.

Synchronica's Mobile Gateway 3.0 provides carrier-grade push email and synchronization services for both consumers and businesss users. Serving consumers, it includes back-end support for POP3 and IMAP, connecting to popular mail services such as AOL or Google Mail. For businesss users, it provides built-in support for Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes, and Sun JES, thereby reaching the majority of businesss users' mail systems.

Forward to a colleague

Wel, I tried it this morning and it kep rejecting my user details when I tried to register. It rejected my Exchange settings and every other method I tried, Yahoo, Gmail whatever. And the "User" page cannot be viewed by my work computer anyway.

So ...it's of no use to me.

I'm also not sure about the idea of putting my Exchange user name and password on a foreign (or domestic) site.

I set it up this morning and it seems to work very well:laugh2:
All of my Exchange folders loaded onto my iPhone. I can send messages. But for some reason, it says it's "Checking for Mail..." and it never stops. I don't seem to be getting new messages, and all of my mail folders are empty. It's working my nerves.

Any suggestions?

I had the same problem. I had to remove the s from https to get it to proceed.

Then you get to deal with the nearly infinite "page not found" errors. I am hoping that their site is getting slammed and it will start getting better. I haven't gotten it to work yet, but am still trying.

I wasn't able to do the "send", so I did the manual configuration.

QUESTION: What is the url for the incoming an outgoing servers? I try what is pictured in the manual setup screens (www.trymobilegateway.com), but it cannot log in.

Someone who has this working, please look at the mail account settings on your iPhone and tell me what the servers should be set to.

Per the instructions on their website (http://www.synchronica.com/syncml_support/apple-iphone-configuration.html), you use www.syncml.biz for both the incoming & outgoing mail server addresses. Your username is your e-mail address & your password is your Exchange Mail password.

I used www.syncml.biz as the address for incoming and outgoing setup and it worked perfectly. You must do manual sync setup to get it to work. There us a setup manual that is on their website.

Ok, I am getting incoming mail. Outgoing fails.

Is everyone else experiencing hugely slow response times?

Also, isn't this supposed to allow sync with contacts and calendar? I don't see how that would work.

Yeah, expanding our servers sounds like something that takes days or weeks.

Anyone have ideas on contacts and calendar?

If all this thing does is replace IMAP, then I want to know now. I don't want to waste my time if it is nothing more than a very slow substitute for IMAP.

I'm exactly the opposite...I can send, but I'm not getting any incoming messages although all my folders show up.

It's ONLY mail. No contacts. No calendars. No tasks.

The website where you configure the access has tabs for "appoinments" and "tasks"; I thought those would allow synchronization with Exchange int those areas..of course the website is virtually unusable at the moment...

The tabs are there, but I'm pretty sure the check boxes/options are grayed out.

Keep in mind that this company uses the same interface for lots of different phones - this isn't something that was developed specifically for the iPhone. It probably wouldn't have been worth their while to develop a completely separate interface for one platform.

PLEASE use www.syncml.biz for the iPhone trial. Do not use www.trymobile***.com as this is an internal quality assurance server which accidentely made it into the screenshots of the manual instructions. The QA server is a small server that goes up and down frequently - www.syncml.biz is running on a scalable UNIX system now and is intended for the ipublic Phone trial. Please do not use or distribute the link to the QA server, this is not going to help anyone.

Syncing calendar & contacts

Yeah, expanding our servers sounds like something that takes days or weeks.

Anyone have ideas on contacts and calendar?

If all this thing does is replace IMAP, then I want to know now. I don't want to waste my time if it is nothing more than a very slow substitute for IMAP.
The servers have been upgraded and it did take days, not weeks. Running on scalable UNIX systems, now. Feebdack from users is that performance is good.

Synchronization of calendar and contact items with the iPhone is not possible for 3rd party applications as the iPhone does not include synchronization clients which could be used by a 3rd party and it does not allow for installation of a 3rd party client to the device. Synchronica Mobile Gateway does support synchronization of calendar, contacts, tasks and notes over-the-air with any SyncML (OMA DS) enabled device (e.g. Nokia, SonyEricsson, etc). Unfortunately, the Apple iPhone does not include support for this industry standard synchronization.

The IMAP-Exchange relay of Mobile Gateway is very useful for many Exchange users where the enterprise does not allow direct IMAP/SMTP access to the Exchange server, but has OWA enabled. This is often the case because many sys admins consider exposing IMAP/SMTP a potential security threat.
