first problems noticed: battery life and voice mail

so, I got my first bad voice mail the other day. I play it back and it sounds like I'm fast-forwarding through it. Hopefully that was a fluke. I'm saving that VM and I'm going to play it to an Apple Genius as soon as I can get out to a store.

I also noticed really poor battery life. My phone was probably 90% charged last night before I went to bed. I have the phone on standby and doing nothing. I got up this morning and just assumed it would be fine, but got in the car and saw that the battery indicator was in the red.

I'm assuming there should be no reason for this?

Hmmm....I fell asleep on the couch last night, so I didn't get my phone charged. When I woke up this morning the battery was just as full as when I fell asleep.

Yeah, that batter issue is not supposed to happen like that.
Maybe you left wi-fi on? Maybe you left something running on it, or the screen on?

interesting that you mention I left the WiFi on? I have WiFi in the house. Could that really drain the battery, even if the phone is on standby?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it does, possibly? I think i heard that as long as the adapter is connected to something, it will drain the battery.
Just about as bad as a 3G adapter, I would think....?

well that's just it. I left the adaptor unplugged this time. The other night I plugged it in but shut down my computer, expecting it to charge just like my iPod does... well, it doesn't and you have to leave it on to charge... stupid maneuver on Apples part for that one, but whatever.

I haven't noticed any battery issues and I haven't been turning off my WiFi. Although, because my activation took over 30+ hours, I left the phone in the dock and connected to my computer the entire time. I wonder if that might have anything to do with it? Thoughts?

I don't turn off my Wi-Fi and I don't have any issues with my battery.

Like others have mentioned in other threads, do not leave the iPhone plugged in to a sleeping computer or that will definitely drain your battery.

ok... so the WiFi was definitely the culprit. I switched it to NOT check for WiFi connections automatically, and now my battery doesn't drain overnight.

Make sure you hit the sleep button at the top.

The screen will automatically dim, but it will not totally shut off. This will kill your battery. ( i learned the hard way. )

definitely noticed the sleeping computer thing, but it's not turning off the Wifi, but switching off the option to have it automatically ask to join connections. That's what killed my battery life. I've since turned that off and the standby time is now what appears to be normal.

I know I've said it ad-nauseum, but I keep WiFi and Bluetooth shut off until I need them, and I can go about 2 full days, if necessary, before I have to charge again. WiFi is the biggest battery draw... even Apple suggests to turn it off to get better battery life.

Think about it this way... on your laptop with a much bigger battery, you're not going to browse the net via WiFi for more than about 4-5 hours before the battery needs charging. It's pretty amazing the iPhone gets better battery life than that... but you shouldn't EXPECT it to get better battery life than your laptop if you're using it like one.

I am getting about 8 hours use and three and half days standby time before I have to recradle the iPhone. I have wifi on and surf the web, calls and check mail mostly. Occasionally I watch something on youtube at the request of someone who wants to see the computer.....

Have the Apple BT headset on order. I imagine when I turn on BT that will have an impact on battery life.....

As long as I can get a a good 10-12 hours per day with all that on I think I should be happy....?

my phone does NOT have the battery life Apple stated. I will be on Safari for ten minutes and the life goes down pretty rapidly. The battery barely lasts throughout the day. 6 hours of Green life and then it goes into red. I am using the phone a lot, but it's on standby more often then not.

Mine shows three different WiFi networks... my house plus two neighbors and my battery lasts like the energizer bunny

Even playing around with the phone for hours at the casino last night, playing utube videos, songs off the ipod checking emails sending texts, passing the phone around the table etc didn't drain the battry much at all...

Plus I made like $250
