Flash Doubtful In My Opinion

I'm curious why so many people are confident/hopeful that Apple will come out with a flash extension for the iPhone when the darn thing occasionally crashes when browsing a regular webpage and almost regularly crashes when using Google Maps. This implies some sort of internal memory deficiency, and since Flash means more pixels, movements, and processes required by the phone, we will likely see nothing but more crashes should it be integrated without either a firmware efficiency update or a full hardware overhaul first.

Heard something about a "Flash Lite" that wouldn't be as demanding

It's something they've been working on for all mobile devices... not just for the iPhone.

The iPhone has plenty of memory and processing power to handle this application. Without crashes? Doubtful... but then can you name a single computer based device that doesn't crash? At least with the iPhone it's only the application that crashes and rarely the entire phone... I wish the same could be said of the WM5 devices I've owned.

Hope they actually implement it into this generations iPhone though ; ;

Actually the reason I feel it will come to the phone is due to how Stevo presented the feature when he unveiled it - full internet browsing, none - of this light stuff. Since Java and Flash are key elements to this, I would expect that at some point we will see them. Lite version perhaps, but see them none the less. I don't recall if those were his exact words, and I know he is careful, but right now we are still internet "lite" and nothing more. Also, if the only apps developers are supposed to be able to create are these web apps wouldn't flash aid in the development, hence support, for the mobile device?

Hasn't everyone already heard about the Flash update just around the corner?

Here's an excerpt:

Adobe today announced the latest version of its near ubiquitous Web video software, Adobe Flash Player 9. It’s codenamed Moviestar, because it includes H.264 standard video support – the same standard deployed in Blu-Ray and HD-DVD high definition video players. In other words, the quality of video has been substantially improved from the previous version of Flash Player 9. Also added to the mix is High Efficiency AAC (HE-AAC) audio support and “hardware accelerated, multi-core enhanced full screen video playback”.
So, without reading too deeply, this is an obvious no-brainer.

Will the iPhone EVENTUALLY get Flash?

YES

Why?

Look at Moviestar's specifications

H.264 standard video support

The End.

For a noob, please explain. Is that basically a code name for iPhone hah ? :laugh2:

But wait, I this can't be because the OP says that the iPhone doesn't have enough memory or processor horsepower to process Flash.

Play nice, no need to use sarcasm on an EIP noob. I will readily admit that I know nothing about the iPhone's technical specs, however I do speak from experience and observation: Whe browsing a graphics-moderate website or viewing Google maps in sattellite mode the iPhone has a strong tendency to crash the program. This leads me to believe that the memory is deficient.

I am playing nice. Name calling isn't accepted here, so you might want to tone it down a notch.

Memory has nothing to do with it. How much RAM does your PC have? 1 gig? 2 gig? Do you know how much RAM the iPhone has? You somehow have concluded that Safari crashing is the result of an inadequate amount of RAM despite the fact the device has anywhere from 2 to 8 times the memory of your average PC? Here's a hint: It's not crashing because it's lacking memory.

Funny point of interest: I have a guy with 7 posts calling me a "noob". LOL!

Nah, he was calling himself a noob.

But about RAM...

The 8GB/4GB memory is flash memory, not RAM. That would be equivalent to the hard drive in your PC. It can be used for swap space, but not not for actually running apps.

The iPhone has real RAM too, though I've read conflicting reports about just how much (IIRC, anywhere from 128 MB to 512 MB--most likely segmented).

  • Display: 3.5" 320x480 pixels (160 ppi)
    • glass surfaced capacitive touchscreen
    • Manufactured by Optera, Opterex, and Sharp, according to inside sources
    • Balda has confirmed that they are the ODM and are supplying the screen through a partnership company called Optera [1]

    • Pixel Size: 2.2µm x 2.2µm
    • 1,920,000 pixels (2 MegaPixels)
    • Frame rate: 15-30 Frames Per Second
As you stated, I suspect it can swap out to it's 4/8GB memory as needed much like any other PC.

Google Maps crashing, Safari crashing and other apps crashing is more than likely bugs in the software and not lacking hardware.

Yes I was calling myself a noob. And whatever I did to cause this hostility I apologize. I swear I wasn't attacking the iPhone, just making an observation. I adore this little thing and I would love it even more if it had Flash, I'm just saying that it crashes certain graphics-heavy programs just like a computer, and when that happens on a computer it is most likely due to insufficient memory. Anyways my own personal speculation aside, only time (and a leak from Apple employees) will tell if/when our phones will be getting Flash capabilities. Sorry for any raised tempers that may have been caused by this post.

There's no hostility man. I think you take things way too seriously.

But I agree there is a problem with the iPhone but I believe most of those issues can be addressed to patches to the applications. I believe the code, like most code, has bugs in it. The iPhone has plenty of memory and processor power for what it's designed to do. Most 1st generation OS's and applications have bugs, that's just a fact of life. So, the instability will likely be addressed as time goes on.
