... I had the same problem. I just bought the iPhone today from a Apple store in Maryland, and activated it. I played around with it a while and wondered even why after turning all the volume up to FULL, it was still so quiet when playing songs/phone ringing/speaker phone/etc. In fact, the only ringer I could realistically use was Crickets because it was the loudest and most distinct. The others I wouldn't even hear if I was more than 12 feet away from the phone. (Yes, I took the protective screen off it).

So I was showing it to my girlfriend and started playing a song on it to show it off and we just let it go. (First thing she said was "Wow its really quiet.. why is it like that"?) It got about halfway through the song and then all of a sudden just started BLASTING. We weren't even touching it.

Now, everything is LOUD. At least 3 times as loud as it was before... I can't explain why it happened but it seems like this is the way its "supposed" to be, and NOT the way it was when I got it!

Just letting you guys know that the people saying "its really quiet" really ARE hearing something different at "max volume" than the people who are saying everything is fine.

very weird. Hopefully doesn't swap back. :)

This is because of the way the song was constructed and has nothing to do with the iPhone. The song was most likely given a sound boost in the file for that part. Hope this makes sense.

I will say that about 30 seconds after i activated my phone i started making a call, I couldn't hear jack. Was really worried and feeling bad i talked my husband into buying one too. Both phones were like this. Then all of a sudden everything started working properly. ? Weird I was imagining losing $120 + on restocking fees. Thank goodness it started working!

I bought my iPhone at the AT&T store in Lanham at Vista Gardens. I've noticed, especially on phone calls, that the volume seems to have increased substantially since I bought it on the 29th. Go figure...

Yes, this wasn't just a part of the song. ;) Everything was effected.

Very odd bug, but everything is still working A-OK. Have it at half volume and its more than loud enough. Even speakerphone is usable now.

I bought it at the Bethesda Apple store in Montgomery Mall. When he opened the drawer this afternoon it looked like he had quite a few left in stock. Give the store a call - they told me if they had any in stock when I called before I went up there.

Damnit...I wish that would happen to mine. Volume is just loud enough to hear with it up to my ear, but no where near loud enough to hear on speaker phone. I have listened to many songs through my headphones and on speaker and nothing has changed the overall volume automatically. Volume for the Ipod is perfectly fine though.
