Hello, I am thinking about getting Apple TV and would like to know what video converter I should use to convert avi files to mp4, for use in iTunes. Thanks

Ok, I downloaded Handbrake and tried to convert a file. I input the video file and set the output destination and selected that it was a 2nd generation Apple tv file. It converted the movie to an mpeg4 and is only 27mb. Shouldn't it be an mp4 file and be a lot larger? When I double-clicked on it, nothing happens and I am unable to drag it into iTunes.

I also want to note that when I started the conversion, it said that there was about 4 hours remaining. Then I walked away from the computer for about 15 minutes and the process was stopped.

edit--I just realized that when I minimized handbrake, it was still in the toolbar on the bottom right and it was still converting. The program is saying that I have about 10 hours left. Is this normal? My computer is about 5 years old, but this seems like a long time.

Yeah handbrake takes awhile to encode the files. But I recommend to download the newest version the was just released. Then choose the preset to iPad or iPhone. Then change the average nitrate to something around 2300. That makes for a good quality rip. But I find that it's best to encode a chapter here and there and adjust settings to see what the final product is like.

Why not trying xilisoft converter I am happy with mine. But if your computer is that old that's how much the file conversion is gonna last. I had a laptop and it was taking ages to convert.

why pay? vuze already does it for free. and also replaces in transcode auto..
I know that but trust me I've had vuze and was slowing down my pc a lot just bcose of the iTunes mp4 converter and not only that. And besides vuze slowing down the system on old pc there's the posibility of getting a virus it happens to me and I had to reinstall my OS. That unless u own a Mac :)

Thanks for the replies. I just JB the Apple tv and downloaded xbmc and now I can stream any video file to the Apple tv, wirelessly.

I don't usually post and read most of the time. But, I have looked into this thing for a long time and used a lot of programs (paid, freeware, shareware). I agree Handbrake is good and you cannot beat free! But, my favorite is TMPGEnc Movie Style. I had used TMPGEnc products for a long time (Xpress, and DVD authoring tool). Movie Style is completely no brainer. It's completely template based and you have templates for everything and not just IOS devices. I usually use highest quality ipad setting. Apple TV2 can handle that as well. It also has Apple TV format.

If you have a semi descent machine, you can probably get the fastest and best quality out there. Just download their trial version and see for yourself. One bad thing about TMPGEnc products is their paranoia about software piracy. Almost, every time you launch the program, it needs to check with their licensing server that you have a legit copy. That means if you don't have internet access, you probably can't run your own program! But again, for me the quality and speed make up for that annoying feature.

Cheers,

Still support for handbrake, and now it's update, add the presets for the new Apple TV, the iPad and the iPhone 4. Though there are some little flaw(doesn't handle DTS audio tracks or single VOB files) need to use other tools like iFunia to be a complement, overall, it works like a charming man!

I use a program called cucusoft. It's both a DVD ripper and video file converter

yep I was wrong when I chose xilisoft; it does a pretty good job but not as handbreake . I didn't know about it until recently :) it's faster than xilisoft and no fuzzy video as I got with xilisoft when trying to convert from bigger to smaller resolution Mkv to mv4 . I'd definitely recommend handbreak. and on top of everything it's for free :d
