When Jailbroken, you can have those apps close when you exit them, or you can manually close each one that's left open.

Mobile connection doesn't use a lot of battery life. I lock my phone for hours when not using it, and it doesn't use any life. Even at night, it may only lose 7-8% overnight when on but not in use.

Same here. Try a full restore through iTunes and maybe even set it up as a new iPhone. That's up to you. Since you aren't Jailbroken, there can't be anything else causing your battery life to be that bad unless you're just using your Music app a lot, and specific other apps that can cause battery drainage.

If it's a serious drainage, maybe get them to look at your battery? I doubt that's the cause of it though. Usually battery lasts at least 12-15 hours or more depending on how you use the iPhone.

I've noticed my iPhone 4 battery is horrible over the last few days. I was having work done on my car and haven't had my car charger to juice up halfway through the day. I think the use of gps is what's killing mine though. Today it died at 1pm. I almost died with it.

Yes, the GPS is a huge battery drain!

Tips for you people experiencing a drop in battery life:
This is what I have found,
-close out apps once a day
-run brighness half way with auto dim on
-set you email to fetch hourly
-keep wifi and Bluetooth off unless your using
-use wifi instead of 3G when you can
-immediately close out gps based apps when you are done
-do not charge the battery until it drops below 20%.... I had an argument with an Apple rep about this who told me it doesn't make a difference. That's bs, and I know it for a fact. You won't damage the battery charging it at 50%, but expect the battery life to be shorter that day.
-make sure you let the phone charge for 2-3 hours after it says 100%.... it trickle charges

I can leave mine over night not charging and it will only lose 2%-5%
