I suggest for anyone having volume problems to use the provided headset almost exclusively.

1. No danger of dropping your phone
2. Run the cord under your shirt and when you're off a call, let the headphones sit on your collar. Answering calls is as simple as putting them in your ears and pushing that button.
3. It's stylish and loud.
4. You can hear the person's voice in both ears, like they're controlling your mind. It's kind of trippy.

I think it looks pretty stupid.

Low volume isn't a "bug". The volume control has NOHTING to do with any new features on this phone, there is NO excuse for the volume being so bad. Anyone that claims their volume isn't low should take steve job's dick out of their mouth for a few minutes and face reality.

I agree with you to some extent but this is the first generation iPhone. There are kinks that need to be worked out. You can't tell me that you honestly thought this product would be problem free if so that is simply your fault. You should have taken off the rose colored glasses. No disrespect but you can't run around bashing the iPhone simply becasue you went into this thing with your nose wide open. Personally I think Apple has done well considering this is a first generation iPhone and there first attempt at handsets. JMO
1. I honestly thought I could use the speaker phone and that it would be at least equivalent of a free phone.

2. No disrepect, but How did I "bash" the phone? And, if I did, who are you to tell me that I can't after I just spent $600+ for a revolutionary product?

3. I understand that you think they have done well...I do not. This is everythingiPhone is it not?

the speaker could be louder but for the most part it is more than adequate in the city or driving in a car with windows down. And I doubt this is an issue that is fixable via a software update

Please consult your physician and have your ears cleaned. There. Better now?

Low Volume on Calls

My phone is terrible when holding it up to my ear to hear when making calls.

I have called Apple Support and they started a case number. If you have not talked to Apple, then they will not know that you have a problem. Please pick up the phone and call them. They are nice to deal with on the phone (use a land line of course so you can hear) and tell them what is happening.

They (Apple) are going to call me back in a couple days. If they don't fix the problem I will go back to the Apple Store and do an exchange even if I have to Pay the restocking fee. I have until the 13th to do this and that will buy me another 14 days of time to decide what I am going to do if I have a 650.00 brick. I am very disappointed in the receiver volume and can only hope that they will fix this. Oh, I ordered a Bluetooth from Apple too, so I can see if that will help. To be honest I have no idea if they can fix this or if headsets and Bluetooth are the only answer. I do so much want to keep the phone.

If the Plastic police did not get the first part of this reply, I have already talked to Apple, and no they didn't feel it necessary to tell me about the plastic nor did they suggest that I might have wax in my ears. I guess they are smart enough to know that if the volume is low on the receiver that I would see any plastic covering it. To be honest I do not remember even removing any plastic from the receiver part of the phone. But to be clear, the receiver is the small slit (speaker) at the top of the iPhone, I have nothing covering it and my hearing is just fine. My iPhone has Low Volume period!

I've noticed that you really have to move the phone up a bit higher than feels natural in order to hear the loudest that the phone can be. Just play around with it next time you are on a call. I thought the same thing at first but when I finally found the sweet spot I actually have it turned almost all the way down !

Another thing I've noticed is, and a bunch of other peeps and I were discussing it today, is that I think on the speaker phone, Apple has sacrificed a little volume for sound quality/clarity. For all you used to having your speakerphone REALLY loud, have you noticed how CRAPPY you old phones sounded when you do that? Obviously Apple being the sticklers they are for quality didn't want that happening. I for one prefer the better quality.

No, I didn't. My old phone was much louder and much clearer. The sound on the iPhone sounds almost muffled, or too much bass in it, it's hard to describe-but it's EASILY the worst speaker on a cell phone I've ever heard.

Something I've also started to believe about the Speaker phone..... I think it is turned Down Due to a poorly thought out design. The speaker is NEXT to the Mic. The louder you Make it the more it is going to feed back into itself. At the low volume that it is set to NOW people can still hear themselves talking, How bad is it gonna get if they let us turn it up? I think this was something realized late in the process and the low speaker volume is a late game work around.

I don't know what cell provider you are calling to or from, but mine is exceptionally clear.

Man the quality with the earbuds is AMAZING.
I find just the opposite to be true. There's too much bass, the volume is great but the sound quality is horrible. In my car yesterday I used it and I couldn't make out what the other person was saying. My car is extremely quiet and I had the windows up and everything.

I've found that if I hold the phone higher on my ear than what feels normal and press it tightly to my head, I can hear better. It's still not ideal, but usable. With the head phones it's really kick ass, but I don't do many calls with head phones.

This is the best explanation on the subject I have read so far. Still, I would take the feedback if it meant actually hearing the person on the phone....
