What would prevent this dongle from being used on the first generation iPad or even our iPhone's?

...probably a bit of hardware too.

Same reason my component cable works on my ipad but not on my 3gs.

So are they saying that all apps in the app store will now be able to be shown on my big screen TV or just the stock apps from Apple?

I can see that being fun for gaming. Imagine steering the iPad while connected to the TV, watching your race on the big screen.

I wonder if HDCP will make things a pain in the ass.

Honestly, they really need to ditch all these silly adapters and just do it all through AirPlay.

I would bet they thought of that, but declined to do mirroring over AirPlay because the latency in WiFi is still enough to throw you off if you're tapping away at the iPad while looking at the big screen.

Nothing it's already available, from an aftermarket place, Apples may be slightly different but since its been done already, it might need a JB to get it to work. They would just need to trick some code into thinking the device was an ipad. Maybe it will be part of the iPhone 5.
