I have never noticed this but for what purpose is this home icon kept ?

I'm not sure but my predictions is that with iOS 8, we should be able control the lights, thermostat, and and even security cameras in our house

We can already do those things with apps. They need to be handled through individual apps since there is a whole slew of hardware counterparts available. I don't think Apple wouldn't have any interest in trying to control all of them.
Initially, I was guessing it was iCloud Drive, which is like DropBox and used for storing files, but I looked that up and Drive has a different icon. That will be available with iOS 8 and Yosemite or on a PC running Windows 7 or later.
