You need POP3 access. The only way to get that is to upgrade to a premium account for $19.95 a year. There's no way to do it online - you need to call the number 1-800-494-2962 to have them set it up over the phone. Once you get it, you will be able to plug in the following values for you incoming and outgoing server:

pop3.email.msn.com
smtp.email.msn.com

I have a paid MSN account too but for some reason I cant get it to work. it just shows the same message. I tried the outgoing/incoming server provided by MSN and still no success. I know MSN/Hotmail premium is also pop3 because it works for outlook pop3 settings. Not sure what I have to do for the iPhone tho.

You know what, I'm having the same problem myself. Maybe AT&T blocks hotmail or something because Apple doesn't like them. Who knows. I think the lady on the phone told me the wrong host names, I'll have to call back.

Anyone know how to fix this?

When I was trying to figure out how to get my Hotmail address work with the iPhone I was told about Izymail.com. This was the anwser, and it was only about $20 per year.

As it turns out, having a hotmail plus account does not give POP3 access. Technical support wrote me an email saying:

Dear Tyler,

Thank you for writing to Windows Live Hotmail Technical Support. My name is Celeste and I gather that you need to know the POP3 and SMTP server of your account. I understand how important it is to have your concern addressed immediately and I sincerely apologize for not responding to you sooner.

Currently, accessing through POP3 setting has been discontinued for Windows Live Hotmail Plus accounts. However, you can still continue accessing your account using an e-mail client such as Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express through HTTP service. Here is a link that can provide information so that you can set up your account:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;287424

You are valuable at Windows Live, and we look forward to providing you with consistent and effective service. We appreciate your input and involvement in our Windows Live products.

Sincerely,

Celeste G.

So it looks like the only way to do this is through izymail.

Izymail is working very well for me. I am sort of thrifty, so I had wished it had been free, but it is not.

I called but there is no option for Hotmail Premium. So, I called Hotmail Customer Support and they told that this service has been discontinued. If you were successful, please describe what you did once you dialed that number

MSN changed their host names in June 2007. For paid MSN accounts (i.e. user@msn.com), try these POP settings:
Incoming Mail Server Host Name: pop3.live.com
Outgoing Mail Server Host Name: smtp.live.com:25
(Try leaving out the port number out if it doesn't work the first time.)
Leave the Incoming/Outgoing Uses SSL "ON" and Authentication on "Password". You shouldn't have to enter these, they are the defaults.
For me, it doesn't download as perfectly as on the MSN client on your computer, but you can at least send from your MSN account!

please edit this entry - its wrong and I just made a friend waste $19 on it because I did not scroll down.

Seems like the error was on your part then..
Yes my error too, but caused in part by this misinformation. Why leave false information up that tells people to send money to Microsoft for a feature they don't offer? (Its very easy to edit a post - as I have just done, now twice, with this one.)

I have seen this wrong information in other places, so lets help people who are frustrated with this by cleaning it up.

The facts as far as I can see it is that to get pop3 service for Hotmail, you need to pay $9.95 per *month* for MSN Premium or do something like Izymail for $18 per year. There is a service called Hotmail Plus but it does not include POP3, and this is very confusing already because Yahoo has a service Yahoo Mail Plus which does.

Honestly, would not use Hotmail it sucks, but some people need this, so lets make it as clear as possible.
