I can't believe Apple hasn't done this. I was playing around with the YouTube App today and just thinking how easy/cool it would be to go to a small App version of the iTunes store. Just think of all the impulse purchases they could rake in. No more writing down a song title and then buying it once you get home. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before they find more ways to suck all our money

I can see

I can see this also & was thinking about this the other day. Apple stands to make a lot of fast $$ with this app. Wait on the firm ware updates in a couple of months...we should see a lot of good updates!

For some reason, I cant imagine them doing this.
Why not? It's the next logical evolutionary step for digital music. IMHO, I believe it's in the works. Heck other music services have the capability. Apple will get around to it.

It's certainly technically possible—afaik, the iTunes store is basically webkit based anyway (web browser).

The problem is piracy and disk access. Once your downloaded file is on an iPod, it can could go to multiple computers—I think Apple doesn't want to go down that route if it doesn't have to.

The problem is, that's not Apple's call to make... it's the record companies and movie studies licensing them content.

There's a bigger issue at hand here—one I think Apple would have tackled by now if they could without pissing off the giants.
