How can I go back to Phone screen?

Sorry I'm a newbie here. I got a question regarding the Phone screen. Today I accidentally set up a voicemail password for iPhone 3gs even though I don't have visual voicemail service AT&T. Therefore, it said unavailable to access. So i wanted to go back to the Phone screen by tapping cancel but it didn't let me. The greeting screen kept popping up. My question is what's wrong with it. Any input is appreciated

Well, I am not sure what to tell you except you can try going into settings, general, and reset all settings. This doesn't harm any data you have put on the phone, but it MIGHT reset the visual voicemail for you.
To just get out of that screen, if you have one of the latest versions of iOS software, you can double click the home button and switch to another app. Then double click the home button again and "hold down" the phone icon till it wiggles and has a minus icon in the corner. Tap the icon and it will close the phone app formally. Then next time you open it, it should go back to either favorites or recent.
