The back might scratch if you put it in with keys. I have that clear case on mine to prevent that. My front has no scratches so far. But its never been dropped and I don't keep other things in the pocket my iPhone resides in.

Its durable but use caution!

The back easily scratches just like the backs of the macbook pros. Try getting one the skintight cases. I have the black one from Speck which is nice and doesn't add a lot of bulk.

I have yet to own a phone or anything that is used daily that doesn't show signs of wear and tear. It is always a good idea to get a case or sleeve to protect the phone. Every time I have been lulled into a sense of complacency about a phone and not getting a case I regret it. So get a case and protect your new iPhone! You will thank yourself later.

I have had 3 iPhones already. Trust me on this one. The screen is very scratch resistant, the metal ring around the screen is very scratch-prone, the silver paint on the back is very thin(bad quality) and will scratch with the slightest scrape, it must be protected.(at least the silver paint)

I carried mine without a case in my pocket normally reserved for keys and several times forgot and put my keys in with it. It has absolutely no scratches on the glass, but the shiny frame around the glass is slightly marred.

I take very good care of my phone (yet to drop and have a dedicated pocket) but I don't carry it with a case. I have yet to scratch anything on my phone and that includes the back and metal ring. Since its in a purse you may want to get a case for it.

i am yet to drop mine and i to have a dedicated iPhone pocket. i also bought the speck tough skin, which i love. the only thing im worried about it is little particles getting caught between the case and the iPhone and scratching it.
