How long do you think it will be before the next iPhone version comes out?

So do you think we'll see another version of the iPhone later this year, or early 2008? I could easily see another version being unveiled at Macworld, and then made ready for sale almost immediately after.

I can see updates to storage, 802.11n, GPS, 3G, other stuff maybe by the time Christmas comes, but no really new versions for the next year. I expect this iPhone to remain unchanged, other than the upgraded internals, for a while.

good question. one we would all love to have a definitive answer to lol my guess would be X-Mas. Apple themselves won't know for sure until they see how well there 1st one sells. I myself will be purchasing it and returning it back just on principal alone.

I don't know about this but I heard that the reason they don't include 3G in iPhone is due to power management and unavailable space inside the phone to carry the components. Therefore I'd say that the 3G update should come with a new version (new shape, everything). No idea about date though.

i read that 2.0 can be expected out around xmas time or early 08. but thats speculation; without even having a date for the first update yet, it's still way too early to tell. i personally was going to wait for 2.0, but I will probably give in before then. I think i'll just sell iPhone when 2.0 comes out, and take a loss. it seems worth it. any thoughts?

well.. since Apple usually releases one big thing at a time.. i think the next thing is leopard.... maybe a larger iPhone by christmas... but other than that.. i think maybe just some software updates to the iPhone within the next couple months would be more of a 'realistic' expectation.

I say we wont see 3g for a long time... if they wanted to put 3g in the phone they would have put it in from the start. They wouldn't have released it just a year after the first one. IMO the iPhone's hardware wont be changing for a long time. This phone was built to grow.

If we see anything it will be a bigger flash drive by 1 or 2 gigs! maybe louder speakers, but i have a feeling that will be a minor software update.. These phones use flash drives like the ipod nanos and i don't see any 10gig nanos. while the ipods use harddisk drives which require a lot more space.

Processor upgrade you say? wont increase sales because the speed is not advertised.

all this 2.0 talk is scaring me i don't want to spend another 600$! It be like microsoft selling an updated version of xbox a year after its release! oh wait they already did that. hehe poke poke microsoft. I bought your zune hoping for a firmwire update to buy songs on the go, but your a no show.. so now im back to Apple with an iPhone.

Ok enough bashing on microsoft.. Apple wheres my FM radio? :(

any expectations of price going down, if not updates, by Xmas? I can certainly wait in that case :)

Well think Apple will release iPhone at the beginning of holiday season this year, but Apple is probably thinking of designs for release 24 months from now as many large businessses do. Just like boeing and the 787 that plane hasn't even flown yet and they have had it on the drawing boards for years. So Apple probably has the 4rth an 5th generations already drawn up.

When you think "another version" of the iPhone, think "marketing".

First Apple will have to collect all of the bugs from the Beta Testers (thats us) who purchased the new phone - volume control issues on ringer et al, battery performance, adjustments to email such as possible spam filtering - and other issues.

While technical division is handling bugs, the iPhones Apple had made initially need to be sold and so no new phones, from a hardware standpoint, can be sold.

As the purchased inventory becomes depleted, software fixes will be coming out to bolster sales and handle important bugs.

True, GPS will most likely be a welcome addition for a new phone. There is already new battery technology that may come out this year or early next to extend battery life more to what has been advertised.

Also, I would look for the new phone to have proximity charging, where you lay your phone near a wireless charger. This technology is already present, and will be definitely a prospect for a newer version.

I say, mid 2008 to late 2008 for a new model depending upon how much the base costs to Apple are to make a 3X markup or more.

doubt iPhone prices will go down...because ipod prices don't go down...new ones come out..possibly cheaper ones but Apple does fine w/o lowering prices. eventually i think people just give in and pay.

An FM radio, 3G and user changeable battery seem to be big on the iPhone wish list in the UK, closely followed by more third party businesss application.
If they can get this together by Xmas then it could be a fine Christmas of Apple and its European partners. If not I'm not convinced it will be that big a hit...the hype is no longer there and although it's good, at £350 a piece, it's doubtful if it's that good, when it is tied to a £50+ per month, 18 month contract. It needs 3G, better battery etc to give it a fresh appeal for the European market.

I don't really think there will be a better iPhone coming out this year, If anything comes out this year, it will be a lesser version of the iPhone because if they come out with a better one this year, they will make many costumers that bought the phone when it came out angry. But maybe they would come out with a less version, without as many features more of a phone, instead of everything else, like maybe just a phone and an ipod or something like that.

I'm still on the fence as well. I don't think v2 is likely anytime soon. I'm more concerned with price drops and what the firmware updates include.

One can look to the history of the iPod to get an idea of when to expect v2. What is the average time lag between iPod versions? I don't know the answer but I'm sure other members here do.

I don't expect a price drop this year. I anticipate that the iPhone is going to be a hot holiday item so there is no need for a price drop. Also, doesn't Apple have a history of not doing price drops on the iPod? I may be wrong, but I thought that they quietly let the supply of the current generation dry up and then release the new version at the same price point.

My hope is that Apple sticks with the current technology platform for a while and instead focuses on firmware updates. I hope the first update comes out soon to help with my decision.

Is GPS something that could be done via the accessory port or Bluetooth. I anticipate an accessory market every bit as big as that of the iPod.

nothing would make me happier than for them to wait 2 years to release the second version. update this one with some of the missing features in the next few months and then wait until all of us with the freshly minted 2 year contracts expire. and hopefully AT&T will subsidize the next one that way we can enjoy some upgrade discounts.
