I'm curious on how to do this because I am going to attempt the custom ringtones hack.

Open iTunes, select the song(s) you want to convert, right click and choose "Convert to ACC" (which will make all the songs .m4a format)

I'm in the process of converting all my mp3's right now bc .m4a is a better encoding and it saves space.... The conversion speed is pretty quick through iTunes too....
