Same for me. I just use common sense. I don't put my phone in the same pocket with keys or change and I usually buy a leather slim fit sleeve to protect it while in my pocket. Works perfectly.

It's an inside breast pocket in my leather jacket. On the rare days here that it's too hot for my jacket, I carry a purse and put my phone in a microfiber bag,

Clean the screen first and buy quality, but not over priced screen protectors. Then use a squeegee and best of luck, is how I go about it. I always use just plain sticky protectors never ones with liquid like zagg. Liquid and my device just don't mix since I'm afraid of screwing something up.
