I cannot AirPlay both video and audio (from iMac and iPhone 5) to First-Gen Apple TV?

Is my only option to upgrade to the Apple TV 2?

I honestly don't know if that's your only option, but I think it is. If you're going to upgrade it might as well be to the ATV3.

Yeah, you'll need to upgrade to an ATV2 or 3. AirPlay isn't compatible with the ATV1.
