I cannot sync my iPhone 4s with my MacBook Pro

Please help. I use my phone more than my lap top and always add new info on my phone first.
Every time I sync my iPhone to my mac book it does not pick up my new appointments and doesn't update any contact info in my address both either.
Please could some one give me a step by step process to change this problem. It is driving me nuts.

Do you have the boxes checked to sync contacts and calendars under the Info tab for your phone in iTunes?

If you're running iOS 5 and OS X Lion you can set up iCloud to automatically sync contacts and calendars over the air.

I just called Apple support and because it is within 90 days of me buying my new iPhone they were able to help me in 37 minutes by a very helpful guy called Alex.
It was a combination of having an older operating system and confusion with syncing with icloud and my lap top. There were two masters . So I have changed the settings on my iPhone and it all works really well now.
Am one happy girl.
