Mine was quick too. Why are so many people have problems? is it just the shear volume of people?

I think its for two reasons.
1) Some people did not follow Apples site daily to get prepared. Such as having 10.4.10 running with the latest version of iTunes.
2) There are so many people activating that I'm sure the iTunes site is overloaded from time to time.

However I did mine and it went really fast, truly impressive. All phones should be activated this way.
