iCloud/photo stream backup question

I now have an iPad mini and decided to backup both devices on to iCloud.

The problem is that the camera roll on my iPhone is more than the 5 gigs Apple gives me.... I also use photo stream too

The question is if I just backup all the data but still leave photo stream on will my pics be saved there?

Where does that photo stream pics get stored? As of now I'm not using iCloud for my backups but the photo stream pics are stored somewhere but where?

Photo stream is not part of your iCloud storage and only keeps 1000 pics for 30 days. So if you have to restore your phone you would loose all other pics. So if you don't want to lose your camera roll you will need to save them somewhere or buy more iCloud storage.

Now for the 1000 pics for 30 days if I had 100 pics in there will they vanish after a month?
