if i get a new phone will i be able to restore from previous device?

i recently lost my iPhone 3g and i am wondering if i get a new replacement one, if i would be able to restore the data from the one i had. i am thinking that the last backup was made right before i upgraded from 2.2 to 3.0. if all else fails, i should be able to restore to 2.2 to use that save, right? but i am also wondering if i get the 3gs, if it would let me restore to 2.2, even though i doubt it would. i am thinking about just getting a regular 3g, but if i have enough, and the restore works, ill think about getting the 3gs.

When you get the new phone it won't be on anything less than 2.2 unless it is a 3GS which will be on 3.0/3.0.1. A 2.2 backup will work on 3.0, but a 3.0 backup is not compatible with anything less than 3.0. If you get a replacement you should be fine.
