iMessage confusion

Does everyone using ios5 use an email address or Apple id to text each other?

so how does an ios5 iPhone user attach an email to iMessage. How would it recognize it?

I don't know if you can attach an email. From what i can tell you choose either the email address or phone number
and send the test as normal

I found it. Under settings. Messages. You can add email there.

you can use your Apple ID or can add any email as well. I do not know if there is a limit but I have put in 3 email addresses.

You can add them at Settings->Messages-> Received at->Add Another email

Facetime has the same type of setting as well.
