Aiea, HI
I know MS is the major competitor, but in all the documentation I've read there's no mention that I can sync my mail with Hotmail, which I've been using for a loooong time.

Does anyone know yet if that will be offered eventually?

Take a look at IzyMail (http://v3.izymail.com/), a POP3 gateway into Hotmail and other webmail systems.

Izymail still working?

For those of you who signed up with Izymail to access your Hotmail accounts, are you still able to send messages?

I had it configured and working on my original iPhone over the w/e (which is now pushing up daisies). I got my replacement iPhone last night and haven't been able to send mail using the same settings. I can receive mail, albeit slowly given how much traffic these guys are seeing from new iPhone subscribers.

Anyone else having problems contacting their SMTP server?

I am having the same issue. It worked yesterday for 3 emails, but errored out for a while before sending. Today, I can't send at all. I just opened up a ticket with Izymail. We shall see what the deal is. BTW - I am using IMAP on the iPhone.

Mine did finally start working again today. After a few resets it worked - still not sure what the problem was.

Good luck!

The IzyMail IMAP server is severely overloaded due to the ongoing rush of iPhone users on our system. We are very well aware that response times are far to slow at the moment.

A system upgrade and added capacity is underway. Since this hit us in the middle of a move to a new data center, it turns out to be quite a complex operation and takes its time ...

Having said that, the easiest short-term solution is to revert back to a POP3 connection for now. The POP3 servers are less loaded and can better handle the extra load.

Hope this helps,

What is the best interface option to use if most of my Hotmail use is primarily sending photos taken with the iPhone?

I will receive mostly text emails without attachments.

Hotmail Access

There is a way to indirectly access Hotmail via 3rd party email source. www.fastmail.net (POP3) gives access to your hotmail via hourly updates. Access your XXXX@fastmail.net account which has all your hotmail email. P.S. its a subscription email service, but it works I'm using it.

Oooooor depending on your hotmail, you can forward emails from hotmail to gmail which does have pop3 :) I have 2 hotmail accounts one allowed fwding to gmail the other didn't, but did allow me to forward to other hotmail accounts, so i just fwded to the other hotmail acct that did allow gmail fwding. hey presto all email comes to the iPhone.

Trying to set up Hotmail as pop on the iPhone is an exercise in futility. Sign up for an account with one of the supported mail services (gmail, yahoo, aol,.mac) and forward your hotmail. It solves a great many headaches.

As far as the server names go you can use cwmx.com as the SMTP for any email account regardless of who it's with (providing the phone isn't hacked and is still with ATT) It's a generic ATT server that seems too work consistently.

The forwarding was not working well, so i tried the Izymail.com solution. Very nice and works very well. There is a free version and a paid version. Free version works quite nicely for me.
