GM is the exact same as what just came out. You don't need to update.

You will need to update eventually. The OS will expire.

happened to me with beta 6. All of the sudden one night my iPad shut off and would not turn back on past the activate screen. Once i updated it everything was deleted. I did not update to GM and am going to restore iPad and setup as new with iOS 5.

Yes, Betas were coded to expire, for example; Beta 7 will expire on Oct 20th...however I don't see any expiry date on the GM.
