When the iPad is attached to the PC it syncs as advertised but the battery indicator states 'not charging'. The iPhone 4 charges while attached to the PC. What is the difference?

Hello! Your PC charges the iPhone 4 correctly because it uses a lower wattage then the iPad. The iPad uses 10W which your PC isn't designed to do, it charges. But it charges VERY slowly. But it shouldn't be displaying not charging. Try resetting it.

If memory serves...It is charging even tho it says it isn't.
Try putting it in sleep mode, it should charge , even if its not a high powered usb2.0 port. What happens if you leave it overnight?

It will display not charging, this is normal like listed above it uses 10 watts were a iPhone uses 1.5-2 watt. The ipad will charge but do not use it during this time. Just put it to sleep and leave it connected. Do note if your computer goes to sleep it will kill the power to usb port and not charge. So computer has to stay awake. The new Macs has a higher wattage output just for these reasons.

One night I plugged my iPhone into my iPad charger by accident. Could that cause damage to my iPhone?
Just to clarify your computer will charge the iPad even when it says not charging. It will charge the iPad slowly as previously mentioned.

then you charge it slowly through your computer, even though it tells you it isn't charging! ;-)
my iPhone charger and ipad charger look exactly alike so I had to mark the ipad one with a marker to not get them mixed up. It's best to charge from charger for the ipad and you should not hook the iPhone to the ipad charger either.
It makes literally no difference. They are just USB cables... the iPhone uses voltage control circuitry which means if you plug in an iPhone using an ipad charger it will limit the charge it receives / draw less.
If you plug your iPad into an iPhone charger then it will charge, but again, slower.

One charger is the IPad's charger (top). the one on the bottom photo you sent says iPod.You changed your answer !
