Yes, as long as your device is backed up you can transfer all your information to the 4S. Do you use iCloud?

No not sure only using the 3GS at moment just waitin for new fone to arrive it is my upgrade

Update your firmware to iOS 5 and use iCloud to ensure your data is saved.
