I never thought about this as a possibility, but according to Sean King of Mac radio, this is the way it's going to happen.

Here is his quote: "Think about it - why would Apple require an iTunes account to use the iPhone? How is Apple getting around the need to have every Apple store tied into AT&T's customer database? Remember the last time you bought a phone in store? How long did that take? 30 mins? Does Apple really want the iPhone customers hanging around that long, slowing down the purchasing process?"

i think you'll have a 1-800 number to call and activate your iPhone account just like you do when you order a new phone online.

I wonder if the at-home iTunes activation is only applicable to phones purchased through Apple Stores or Apple.com...Do we know whether or not AT&T will allow this?

Is the same for ATT they can activate your phone in the store if you want or you can do it at home I know because I have a problem with my account and I’m force to activate in the store because I’m not eligible for upgrade in the automated system but only a rep. can check the notes in my acc. so iTunes won’t work for me plus I’m in a family plan and need to upgrade 2 lines

I think they'll all be done this way. That will free up the process in the stores regardless of whether it's an At&t store or Apple store.

If you can get credit and you can't afford the deposit, then I guess you could take it back to the store within the 14 day period or sell it on eBay.

Thanks, I sure hope that it does! I have been pre-approved for credit with a $0 deposit at the store where I am going to purchase the iPhone, so hopefully they will just let me pay the $599 (possibly the activation fee?) and go home.

Now I suppose everyone will want to bring their laptop to the store to activate immediately.

I'll be activating in the parking lot as soon as I walk out.:laugh2:

Glad I loaded all my iTunes stuff on my laptop now.
I imagine a lot of grinning folks sitting on the floor outside Apple stores unboxing their iPhones and pulling out their laptops while others waiting in line look on.

That's a good point, ColsTiger... The KeystoneCops will surely be so imposing and deterring that no hardened criminal will want to smack a pimply geek upside his head and take his shiny new gadget...

Wait a second... Have you ever been to Jackson, Mississippi? I can see just that very thing happening with regularity. Little, old ladies being bashed in the face in midday at Kroger, city council member being held up at shotgun-point in her own driveway in bright daylight on a Saturday... Yeah... "Security" will prevent muggings...
