iPhone and AT&T Prepaid SIM

I have an iPhone that was previously activated with AT&T but I canceled the account back in January because I still had a year left on a 4 line Sprint account. My plan was to reactivate it next January and move all 4 lines to AT&T. I am thinking though now, I'll probably just go ahead and buy a 3G iPhone then and activate it instead. What I would like to do though is between now and January, is there anyway I could use my old iPhone with some type of AT&T prepaid SIM? The thing is, I make and receive very few calls each day and many days don't use the phone part at all; but I do need to carry a phone with me for emergencies mainly. Right now I'm always lugging around my Sprint Moto Q as well as my iPhone (which I basically use as a Touch). I'd love to stop toting my Q around and just use the iPhone instead.

Can I get a AT&T prepaid SIM without buying a phone with it and just stick it in my iPhone? What about Edge? Is there anyway to keep the SIM from using Edge for data? I'd prefer just to use WiFi when available. When not available I just won't access Mail or Safari.

Has anyone else done this?

Sorry but as soon as you slip in a different AT&T sim card it will want to activate again in iTunes. I think if the phone is unlocked with a program like ziPhone you might be able to get it to work. Maybe one of the ziPhone or unlocking gurus can help.

I guess I was hoping/thinking that if you activated the prepaid sim before you put it in to your iPhone everything would work okay. I thought I'd heard folks moving sims from another AT&T phone to the iPhone and they worked. I have no problem with unlocking my phone with ZiPhone (in fact, I've already jailbroken it numerous times). I guess my main concern is I didn't want to have to buy the Gophone phone. It would be a waste of money. I just need the sim.

When the standard iPhone has a new sim inserted it automatically requires a new set up in iTunes. IF you want to use it with another sim card than the one it was set up with originally, then you should really ask a question in the iPhone modifications forum.

prepaid sim

I just put a prepaid SIM in my iPhone 3g yesterday that I activated with a different ATT phone I was no longer using, and it worked with iTunes just fine. Still recognized the iPhone under its old name, device serial number, and iTunes profile, and didn't ask me to change anything. Showed a different phone number, though, which is what I would expect. Maybe something's changed since last year?
