I don't know if this topic has been covered yet. But does anyone know if the iPhone will be able to be used as a modem? I know for a fact that some pda's can be used as a modem to provided internet access for your computer. I know the motorola q on verizon and other pda's have this function. So does anyone know if the iPhone will have this function also?

why would you want that anyway? edge...serioulsy. And good laptops already have wifi capabilities.
I don't think we have this answer yet. But it's definitely towards the top of my list of things the iPhone must (eventually) have. I would actually be a little surprised if the iPhone does not offer this ability in the first version, at least in a way that someone shows how to do it.
There will probably be a hack... cingular (ATT) sells a separate device for this so I'm pretty sure it won't be included. The only problem is that is has the lower speed connection which would make it pretty painful.
On the plus side you probably won't need your laptop for much. Or you can write your word doc on the laptop bluetooth it to the phone and email it from there...
Rumor has it that this feature will not be present. If it is, expect to have to buy a really expensive data plan to use it

.I have been told the iPhone will definitely not have modem capability plus this would cut ATT&T's revenue because it is cheaper than the wireless PC plan and you could basically pay for one plan and have the capability to use both. I have tried everything on my 8125 and can't get it to work. On my previous Sprint phone you could buy a cable and software and it worked great for about $20 per month and this was on a plain phone.
When you're somewhere without a WIFI signal, but on the At&t network, you could connect by using your iPhone as a modem. I know you can do this with most phones, so I don't see why not.
I honestly don't see why the phone wouldn't have this, it's just a software feature. Nokia phones have had this for ages, the phones hooks up to the net and just acts as a gateway via bluetooth or cable, dunno about Wifi though, but it's possible.
Without 3G though, you'd have to be desperate, and my network operator (Vodafone) downgrades the pictures to speed things up.

EDGE is faster than dial-up and we all suffered with dial-up, and a lot of folks still do. I usually turn off web pics when surfing on dial-up, satellite, or tethering to get my work done. And yeah, I do a lot of desperate work.
It would be and underused feature for most customers. But boy o boy would it be a good marketing tool to taut for the iPhone
Why? You can do it with any phone. And one with 3G would be much faster too. I don't think they want the modem option to be the key advertising feature on this phone.
It is actually really handy though, back at home there's only my Dad and he can't operate a microwave, never mind a computer so there's no internet, not even 56k. I just hook my phone up to the laptop via wifi and get a 3G connection off it, which is useful since I go home to work on my car and I need guides off the net.
Any update to this now that someone could verify it with the phone? It's not always true that WiFi is available and when I travel it would still be cheaper to use my phone as a modem with an unlimited data plan than it is to pay $12/day for a week to use hotel internet services. Slower, yes but more economical.
