people who were oblivious to roaming charges were the ones that got the high priced bill. don't be worried about get a high priced bill as long as you are aware of the roaming charges and head out of states a lot.

Usually I don't have any problems with roaming.. Everywhere I've gone AT&T has had towers. One of the reasons I went with a major carrier instead of the smaller ones. Example, Verizon is somewhat territorial were AT&T is pretty much in all major citys.
But me personally... I dunno if the phone will tell you if its in roaming or not.. 98% of the time Im on AT&T, the other 2% was no coverage from anyone ( usually inside of a building somewhere on a military Base )

Verizon is not a good example to use. They are the second largest carrier and their coverage area is larger than AT&T's. I was with verizon 4 years and they have free domestic roaming. Im with AT&T now of course and not complaining about them but my work phone is still through verizon and I travel to many places where Verizon is clear and AT&T is not.

That said you shouldn't worry about roaming charges unless you travel abroad. I believe all major carriers offer free in states roaming now.
