I don't want to start a hysteria, but did anyone else see the news on this page about 'Quanta Computer To Assemble Apple iPhone'?

In there, it says " According to CBS Marketwatch, Taiwanese manufacturer Quanta Computer has reportedly received the contract to assemble 5 million Apple iPhones. Quanta Computer is the world's largest contract manufacturer of notebook computers (based on revenue) and has plans to ship the Apple iPhone units as early as September."

Excuse me? SEPTEMBER? This better be a second version of the iPhone, or a secondary pressing/manufacturing they're talking about...

Anyone, got any insight?

can't help you there.

the only "concrete" info we've received (time and time again) from Apple is that the phone will be released in late June and with enough quantity to meet demand. how well and how timely they meet demand in june is yet to be seen.

This is the second shipment or what some people are saying "iPhone 2.0". From what I've read (and the source), it's simply a second shipment of iPhone 1.0. Don't worry, we're still on course for late-June release.

so, it's looking like if you don't get a phone on the first go around, you have to wait until september.

I remember reading this story earlier today, and it was related to the Europe iPhone batch.

Europe is more advanced in cell technology than the US. It will probably have better video capabilities and stuff.

From MDN:

... iPhones "manufactured by Quanta will be similar in function to those from Foxconn but with a different outer design to fit different markets."
I doubt much technically is changed inside... my guess is Apple wants to use a differing case design for other markets. (ie a phone sold here will be slightly changed than one abroad so they can tell for warranty purposes, etc).

Really? I wouldn't think they would do that.

If you take the manufacturing stories leaked so far together then I get a total of 15M units of production. The first news story was released months ago about PO's placed for 10M units. Now this about another 5M.

Sounds pretty damn good to me. I get the sense they have the first producer maxxed out and have to look for a secondary supplier.

Why on the NEWS page of this site is there a count down to the release date that only shows 14 days and 23 hours remaining?

that puts it at a release date of June 15th. Is it ironic that this is also the last day of the WWDC in San Fransisco, When Jobs normally does his Keynote? You all know how much Jobs like to say "And this will be available in stores.... TODAY!" and have the word TODAY in big white bold letters on the screen behind him....

Does the site modirator know something we don't?

Whew! Thanks for calming my nerves... I suspected it was something like this, as I pointed out in my post, but still, each day closer to the supposed release date from Apple and no word from them makes me on the edge of my seat!
