iPhone dust control

One thing that keeps crossing my mind is the ability of dust to get under the screen. EVERY phone I have ever had has this problem, although my current Blackberry is fairing better than the rest have. There's nothing that can ruin a beautiful display more than a "Milky Way" of dust across the screen.
Although I'm worried, I do feel that Apple's gonna get this right and I'm thinking it's not going to be an issue, let's all hope!

Does that mean that those "screen protectors" that are used for PDAs and the like would not work with the iPhone? I have used these things for my PDA as well as for my digital cam. It would be great if I could cut one of those babies to size and protect my screen this way.

I don't think I would be taking my iPhone to the beach, but more because it would cause such a wonderful sensation that when I went out to swim, someone may "borrow" it. That would definitely put a dent in my day.

I think (though I don't know) that the touch screen and related software on the iPhone are going to be much more highly developed than that of most other run-of-the-mill touch screens. I'd bet it would reduce the effectiveness of the screen to add another layer of plastic.

We'll hopefully find out in June.

This is true of standard touch screens, but the iPhone uses a multi-touch screen. It has been reported that the sensing system will not detect non-human contact. IOW, you can't use a stylus, wear gloves, etc. It still remains to be seen if placing a plastic film over the screen will prevent the iPhone from detecting user input. Also, if the screen is as scratch resistant as we have been led to believe, a screen protector will not be necessary. I guess this is another thing we will just have to wait and see about.

Oh yeah! Amazing what technology has today when compared to just a few years ago. Apple Care sounds like a prudent investment, with or without a screen protector. Already got burned with a pocket PC and not purchasing the extended warranty... don't want to do that again, especially with something as awesome as this product will be.

Steve Jobs mentioned in his keynote that the iPhone has "Precision Enclosures" so I'm hoping that means no dust under the screen.

My friend's PDA had a massive dust problem, until he dropped it in water and now it has water stuck under the screen, not dust. I've seen many devices with this problem however neither my iPod or current LG phone has any dust. Maybe I just look after my stuff too well.

How much will Applecare be for this thing? I read somewhere they don't expect cing to offer insurance.

I've had a smartphone from cing (Treo 650) for years and they always refuse to insure them even with multi-year contracts. They say these devices are "too delicate" to be insurable - I doubt that they'll offer insurance on a $599 iPhone, but that's just a guess.

WHich is weird. Are other carriers less sensitive to this fact? My nephew and a couple of other friends (tmob, sprint, etc) have all had smart phones that they replaced. Are other carriers offering insurance on phones that Cing will not or am i misreading the situation?

I have had a razr for a while now and haven't noticed a problem with dust. I don't take all that good care of it and have dropped it many times. So, if Steve Jobs says it will be precision enclosure, as one earlier said in this thread (though I don't remember who ), I should be fine.


Maybe it is so dusty I don't even realize it

Apple Care

Reading this thread is the first time I've ever heard of dust under the screen, lol. But now I'm all worried! I've never had any of my cell phones have any dust or anything under the screen, and I'm not at all 'careful' with my phones, lol.

But all this under consideration.... I've never purchased Apple Care. Could someone that has, or that knows a bit more about how it works/how much it will cost or even a link to where they explain it on their website... share you knowledge? It is sounding like Apple Care will be a necessity when buying an iPhone, b/c I KNOW Cingular won't offer any insurance.
