iPhone EDGE only - What?

Hi all, I'm a newbie to the site. I was just on the Apple site and saw that the iPhone will only work on the EDGE network and not 3G, what's up with that? :( That seems really behind the times, especially seeing all of the features that the iPhone has to offer. They talk about internet access, streaming videos, etc, but if you are using EDGE, that will be painful. Anyone know why they are doing this? Any rumors that they will change this?

Thanks!

Jeff

well the phone also uses wi-fi and I don't know about any streaming video things. The edge network is plenty fast from what I have read to support sending/receiving e-mails and some browsing but the places I go 90% of the time have wi-fi so no worries there.

3G is a MAJOR battery drain (currently) for most cell phones. Also EDGE is a WIDELY-distributed standard at this point, whereas a lot of our users here on the board claim they can't get 3G access most of the time.

Good luck even getting a 3g phone in the time being with the government blocking Qualcomm chips from the country.

I just stumbled on the other 3G thread and it's a bit clearer now. That explains why my BlackJack came with two batteries!

What about a GPS Chip? For $500 bucks, you'd think that they would put a GPS chip in the phone, so that it could track you as well as give you directions.

Yeah, like it doesn't have A2DP (stereo bluetooth) either. Nor does it have a freaking flash for the camera. And shoot! It doesn't even have a video camera!

What is this? 2004?

we don't know for certain that it won't have the A2DP bluetooth profile, but I doubt it a little myself. Seems to me if it did have it, they would be talking about it already.

I'm not a mobile phone expert but for all the things people are complaining are missing from the iPhone, is there a phone out there that HAS ALL of these?

GPS
5 MP camera w/flash
Over 8 gigs of flash memory
G3
WiFi
stereo bluetooth
5+ hrs talk time

...and is smaller than your laptop?

Where have you seen stereo bluetooth posted in the specs? I've looked all over for any mention of the A2DP profile, but haven't seen it yet.

DAMN! No video recording function for the camera! Crap, i guess i just "assumed" it would be in there....darn...
Kinda disappointing, as that 4 or 8 gigs of HD space would be a great place to store lots of wacky videos. :p

They could have at least put a flash on it, if no video...

And in what universe have you been hiding! This has been hashed over and over and has been known since January. If there is a program perhaps you should read it or join it. There are a lot of phones that have wifi and things like cover flow, etc.

No one's bashing here. I was just surprised to find out no video function. I thought it DID have that function. Oh well, i still want one, my head didn't explode. lol
