I'm sure by now most of you know that you can use your iPhone as a storage device by zipping up files and renaming them to appear like photos. You move these fake photos to your iPhone's DCIM photo directory and when your iPhone connects to another computer you can download your fake jpg and rename it back to zip to get your files.

Well, one thing that bugs me with this method, is that I can't ever remember what the contents of my fake jpgs are, so to help me I'm starting to make icons to use as the thumbnail image for the fake jpg. Right now I've just got WinSCP, but I plan on making more for specific file types like XLS, PSD, and so on. If you have any suggestions please let me know and I'll add them to the library.

To use this WinSCP icon, simply download and rename the jpg attachment to match the name of your WinSCP zip file. Remove the .jpg at the end so that the file extension is .THM, in example:

IMG_0000.THM

So if you look at the screenshot below, you'll see that I've renamed a zip file into a jpg, and have my thumbnail file named the same thing as that fake jpg.

Now just upload the fake jpg and the matching thumbnail to this directory on your iPhone:

var/root/Media/DCIM/100APPLE

Heres what it looks like in my Camera Roll:

If you'd like a free copy of the open source WinSCP program which has been specially packaged to be portable application and run from inside a folder, you can find it here:

Combine this with SwapCameraRoll should be great then you can dedicate an entire roll to these files!
