I got the 8gig iPhone on Saturday and experienced that applications shut down sometimes. For instance, I was browsing the web and listened to music, and after a while the music just shut down. In another instance I was using google maps on the iPhone and at some point it just turned black and I was returned to the main screen. Anyone having the same issues?

I can only surf the web for about 4-5min or listen to half a song, or do google maps for about minute before it crashes - its pretty annoying. I thought it was the ATT slow ass network, but it crashed at my local hotspot too, but it did hold up longer...

Turn it off for a bit
Don't get me wrong, I love my iPhone, but have to admit I was so close to returning it when it crashed and returned me o the home screen when I played with maps. As a last resort I decided to completely shut it down and turned it back on a good 45 minutes later. . .that was day one. I've had it for 7 days now and it's worked perfectly. No crashing! Yay. I'm hopeful that it stays like this. After all, Apple has never let me down.

I think you must have a defective phone. Mine has not exhibited any of those issues. It is trouble free.
Reinstalled what software exactly?
I'm having the same problem. I'll zoom in on a location, and WHAM! back to the main menu.
I tried a "reboot", but no luck there. I may try the "off" for an hour.
Honestly, I think this is a software problem.
Anyone else with this issue?

I am having the EXACT same problem. I am running an app, everything's running smoothly, then WHAM, back to the main screen, or WHAM, into a wholly different application.
The only time I've ever been able to replicate this problem on demand is using the maps feature. I enter in a start and end point, go to the map view, and moving anywhere off the default field of vision (zooming in or out, or moving in any direction), it does it.
So I made 2 videos, one shows the drop to the mainscreen, and the other one depicts jumping into my contacts list. I know the videos aren't spectacular quality, but I assure you there's no trickery and I did try to keep the entire phone in the cameras' view.

Very embarrassing when this happens and you're showig it off to someone.
It does get better after a restart but still embarrassing!
Also I am having problems with the album art on ipod mode, some do not match the artist or song, they seem to be somewhat scrambled.
And my marshmellow earphones won't work with the iPhone

Yup, it's happening to everyone. Many of the applications are unstable right now. I crash the iPod feature all the time while surfing the web. I also crash the Google Maps app all the time when plotting courses and doing turn by turn directions. I'm hoping they release an update soon to at least address the instability issues.

I had the same isssue while in Maps and Safari. Working along and "POOF", back to the main screen. I visited the local "genius bar" and they reloaded the software. Day three now, no "POOF".....stay tuned!

As a last resort, I completely re-installed the software while hooked up to iTunes, and lost all my data in the process. After I rebooted the iPhone, and loaded Google Maps, the software would still crash, namely Google Maps, Safari, and the iPod would also turn off when Google Maps crashed.
So I called Apple, and they sent me a loaner iPhone. Meanwhile, I tried one more thing...I noticed my SIM card drawer at the top stuck out a little more than my wife's iPhone. So I ejected the SIM card using a paper clip, wiped off the contacts, and reinserted it in my iPhone.
PROBLEM SOLVED! No more crashes in Google Maps. The occasional browser crash. But nothing like before.

Return the phone
This is definitely not normal. The phone either needs to be reinitialized (which can be done through iTunes), or it has a defective part that is causing this. Apple support will work with you.
Note: If you get a new phone, remember to first remove the SIMM from your current phone before giving it back to Apple.
Take the phone back to Apple if there is a store in your area. If you don't have a store nearby, call the Apple support line. If you go to the store, go visit the Genius Bar.
