What the HELL! I thought there wasn't a waiting list?!?!?! According to this site there is one? Can this be BS? I just called a Cingular store and the girl said that they do not have a waiting list and that it will be an online purchase only. Has the whole world gone nuts?

It may have gone mad....mad for the iPhone, but in talking with Apple folk and Cingular folk, there is no list- at least in upstate NY at those two specific places. And online only would be the nuts! :p

Did you read the article? It states that there isn't supposed to a waiting list, but 64% of stores have one anyway. Since there sample size was only 36 stores I would take it with a grain of salt.

Yeah a lot of the stores are independently owned so They may just do whatever they want.

I put my name on a waiting list of sorts.
The only employee in the store (not a manager, so I think he was lying about being alone) said it was more of a way to approximate how many iPhones they will need than a waiting list.
But all I know, is my name is on that list.... Or at least some sheet of paper that he will hand to his manager... pls.....

I was under the impression that the iPhone would only be available from corporately owned AT&T stores, Apple stores and online. Have you heard something that indicates that independently owned AT&T stores will have it too?

These waiting lists are simply lists of names that AT&T store employees will call on release day to let you know that the iPhone has arrived, not a formal preorder list. With so many rumors flying around, I think AT&T store employees probably know as much as we do, maybe even less.

That's what I thought, too.

And if we're assuming that Steve Jobs announces the release date @ WWDC, won't these lists become obsolete?

i mean, by the time the memo from AT&T gets distributed to each store and they sit down and call all these people to tell them the release date, us fanatics will already have known about it.

That article reeks of BS to me, especially these sentences:

On this point, we have stumbled across some info that leads us to believe (spelling) that HonHai is having trouble manufacturing to schedule and is running behind due to some part delays. It appears that the initial 12 million unit run rate will not be available by June 15.
First, they don't cite their sources... which seems very suspicious. Do they want to pull another Engadget here? "Stumbling across" doesn't really cut it in my book as decent journalism.

Second, Apple has never officially confirmed June 15 to be any official date.

Third, isn't 12 million units what Apple wants to sell for the entire year? They expect all 12 million to be available by the release date? That's not going to happen, nor would it be practical.

Finally, they need to stumble across spell check before these dudes go to print.

The only thing Apple has said thus far is it will be released "late june" or that is their target anyway.

Yeah, Apple has been saying late June for a while now. Ever sense the announcement that Leopard was delayed. So that would mean that any date later than June 15th could be the release date.
