A couple weeks ago my iPhone died, and ever since then the phone gradually wanted to charge less and less. Eventually it got to the point where it would no longer charge at all giving me the error "Charging is not supported with this accessory". I have two chargers, and neither work so it is definitely a problem with the iPhone and not the charger(s). I've tried charging using different USB ports on different computers, I've tried charging it directly from a wall in different areas of my house and even cleaning the charging dock but to no avail. My iPhone was jail broken, but I tried updating to the latest iOS and lost everything just to see if it would fix my phone, but it didn't.

I'm thinking of buying parts online to repair it myself, but I'm not sure if I should buy a battery, a charging dock replacement or both. Both together would be about $45-$50, but I'm not sure which is the culprit. If you think I should buy the parts to fix it myself, where would you suggest I buy the parts online?

How long have you had the iPhone? If you've had it less then a year, please don't service it yourself. Apple will be happy to service it for you.

Try blowing in the dock, it might have debris in it.

Sadly I've had it for over a year. I've cleaned the hell out of the dock as well, but it doesn't help.

Im not sure, but I'm pretty positive it's the battery. You said you tried updating the software, which you did successfuly. Try to restore and see.

I already did a full restore+update and it didn't work. I also can't do another since I can't even turn the phone on. It died and won't charge anymore.

Well, wait. How do you know it says "charging isn't supported? Try holding the home and sleep for 10 seconds. If not, I'd try an Apple store even though if your out of warranty. They might help you, or give you suggestions.

I know it says "Charging is not supported with this accessory" because that's what it would say every time I would plug a charger into it. It eventually died and now since it can't charge it won't come on.

Did you try holding it down for 10 seconds? I hope we can find a solution!

Yes. The phone just comes on, and then eventually dies again because it has essentially 0 charge and can't be charged.

Very interesting. Did you do it while connected to a charger? The phone might catch the charge. If not, try an Apple store. If you can't or they turn you down, I'd try try replacing the battery.

I am in the same boat as you, Tehchaos. Every once in while, I can get a trickle. I've tried cleaning out the dock and, from looking around on the net, reformatting seems to never fix this issue. I could believe it to be a battery issue. I bought my 3GS iPhone secondhand and am thousands of miles from any mac stores. I might be able to get a new battery. Unfortunately, this iPhone is my connection to the outside world. It sounds like this might be a firmware limitation preventing charge on old batteries? Might there be a software tweak that could be done to force charging as well? It seems this is a common enough issue that someone has got to have found a better solution then a toothbrush or trip to an Apple Store.
