We just launched this last night after eBay passed the application as a Compatible Application. So it is the first iPhone eBay application with bidding available.

Right now it is based on your watch list but we are adding other features shortly.

Let us know what you think and would like to see in it.

idunno about anyone else but I'd be leery of logging into "My Ebay" through a non-ebay site. Chalk this up as something not to do! I can bid on ebay on my iPhone throught ebay.com on the internet, i don't need this site or any other site. Sounds like a scam to me to gain access to your paypal account/personal information through this site.

Hello Aggieman,

As I can understand your concerns about safety and security, this is why I went through the trouble of getting eBay to do a Compatibility Check on the application. We are part of the Developer Program at eBay and they tested the application for more than a week prior to giving us the Compatible Application Designation.

You also do not log into the my ebay in the application. iPhoneMyeBay transfers you to eBay for authentication. See the faq section on iPhoneAppLab.

If you have other concerns then this should allay any fears you may have - you can now find the application in the eBay solution directory up on the eBay site.

If you do a search for "eBay Solutions Directory" in your favorite search engine and then on their solutions site search for iPhone in the solutions you will find us (SilkSystem).

I will post the link on the blog at our site iPhoneapplab.com.

As well check out who else has tested it and written about it in our blog entries including ZDNet.

On your second comment about just using eBay through the browser - absolutely you can - albeit with more taps and navigation. This app has been optimized for communicating via cell and wifi and for the iPhone display.

Thank you for your concerns and please take a look at iPhoneAppLab.com

sniping reply

Does it snipe?
Hello iFerd,

Good question. The application does not snipe bids on auctions. Because the application uses the eBay API to place bids, eBay only allows developers access to production bid API after the application passes the Application Compatibility Check. In this testing they specifically look for any potential of sniping and will reject your application.

So for us to legitimately create an eBay bidding application for the iPhone sniping (or automated / timed bidding) is not an option.

You can still use the application to manually "snipe" at the end of an auction if you so desire. Truthfully I find that more exciting (but don't tell anyone).;)

Thanks for the reply. Personally, I find winning for my target price more exciting.

Appreciate the iPhone development but can't say I like being asked to login before I can even do anything at all--including just browsing. I don't need to do that at ebay.com, which I guess is what I will continue to use for now.

New Version 2.0 - no log in required

Hello Mike,

As of 2.0, launched this morning there is new functionality and you do not have to log in.

In 1.5 which you saw the log in was required because the application had to pull your watch list and allow you to bid. So it needed to be able to ask eBay for your information and no one else's.

In 2.0 we have added basic and advanced searching which requires no log in. If you want to view your watch list, add items to your watch list or bid then you have to log in just like on eBay.

Appreciate the iPhone development but can't say I like being asked to login before I can even do anything at all--including just browsing. I don't need to do that at ebay.com, which I guess is what I will continue to use for now.

thanks

thanks Mike - it has taken a tremendous amount of work but we are very happy with the application. If you see some other features you would like to see please let me know - either post them here or in our forum on the iPhoneapplab.com site.

Now time for some sleep.

Well, that's your choice. It looks like a pretty solid application, though. You can always use a knife to open a can of food, but a can opener is better. Anything that makes a job easier without problems is good to me.

Just for testing. I used an old ebay account we never use and put an item on the watch list and from the iPhone. logged into the ebay.com web site on my computer and logged in and the watch item showed up. I deleted the watch item from the web and did a refresh on the iPhone and it was gone. That should prove to anyone that it is working with the Ebay site.

How exactly do you get in contact with Ebay's fraud dept. without being a victim of, or reporting on, fraud?

If you have more information, including but not limited to the name of the person at Ebay you were in contact with, please provide it.

I highly doubt this app is not approved. Actually, I am convinced this app is not--in any way--unsanctioned or mischievous.

The identity of chuckiPhone is not hard to figure out. If he was up to no good he wouldn't exactly be so easy to find:

Finally, this was also featured in this blog:

quite funny - he should look in the right area

I find it quite funny that Solstice would say that the iPhoneMyeBay application is not approved when it is listed in the eBay solutions directory up on the eBay site and that the eBay developers program not only blogged about it but put the headline up on the main page of the developers site.

Here are the links; let them speak for themselves.

eBay solutions directory
http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?SolutionsDirectory
(just put in a search for iPhonemyebay and our listing will show up - as well it shows that we have attained the eBay Compatible Application designation)

eBay developer site
http://developer.ebay.com/ (look in the top news on the blog)
http://developer.ebay.com/community/blog/article/?category=Blog.Developer&name=http://ebaydeveloper.typepad.com/dev/2007/07/ebay-on-iphone.html

You are correct Mike we do not hide whatsoever and if anyone has a question they can always send one along to us. The email link is in the product help area as well. In fact that is how ZDNet and AuctionBytes just recently interviewed us via phone (http://www.auctionbytes.com/cab/abn/y07/m08/i01/s03). I won't guess on why Solstice would be bad mouthing the product but there are thousands of eBay users using it, winning items and loving it.

We are really excited about what is happening with the iPhone and are continuing to develop new functionality for all the people using it.

Chuck
