2.1 has seriously messed up my battery life. Definitely not better. Worse.

I have Push off, Bluetooth off. 3G on, Location services on, Wifi on.

I just realized, I also had SSH on (OpenSSH via Jailbreak).

Not sure if SSH makes that much of a difference, but my battery sucks. In the last 5 minutes I've watched it go from 22% to 14%. Without using it.

I'll know more tomorrow if by turning SSH off helped.

If it doesn't, restore. 2.1 has had a very positive effect on everyone else's battery.

Not possible. You might want to try to resynch, or re install.

If that doesn't work, take it to Apple...something else might be wrong.

Check out the threads here about the battery life increases....it has been confirmed by many. I still have full battery, and I disconnected at 9:00am today. Freakin amazing.

Sorry to hear you are having issues. It definitely is not a result of 2.1

It seems to not be draining as much since turning SSH off. I went from 14% when I posted that to just 13% now.

Would SSH drain that much? It *is* constantly looking for connections.

This just figures. I don't' know what I did, but my battery is at 4% and I can't kill it. I'm trying to so I can have it fully die and recharge to calibrate. It's at 4%, I turned BlueTooth on, 3G on, and other stuff. And I'm watching Jobs Keynote video in iPod. And it's sitting at 4%.

Hmmph

This might sound stupid, but how can you tell when your battery has gone down 1%?

Battery life was worse after the 2.1 upgrade, turned off Push and everything's back to normal.

Not too sure about SSH, but SSH periodically sends out a TCP heartbeat/keep-alive to detect if it can no longer contact the server. That's probably what's consuming battery life.

Used my phone kinda lighter than usual today. Haven't plugged it in at all.

It's at 15% left. Sucks.

I'm gonna restore to a clean 2.1 today and restore my data, and test it more tomorrow.

If it's still like this, should I call Apple and exchange it? Will they give me a new one? I have a 16GB 3G.

Mine is also worse after 2.1, by a huge amount. With everything like I had it with 2.0.X now on 2.1 (3G on, location manager on, WIFI on) I am getting only about 5-7 hours out of a full charge before it goes to nothing. Prior to the update to 2.1 I had plenty left at the end of the day with all of that stuff on all day. I have turned off location manager and 3G and it is still terrible. I am restoring right now, see if that helps. If not, will have to go to the Apple store for help.

With the batteries in the iPhone, I believe the charge will stay more full for a longer period until the charge gets to about 40% full. Then the battery will drain much faster than it did to this point. It's the nature of the Li-Ion batteries...I believe.

My first post 2.1 charge did last about 24 hours with pretty heavy usage. All but a few hours were spent using at least one app or the internet.

This is the same problem I had when i upgraded to 2.0. I even more equated it to a problem with one of the App's I installed. Even though the app was closed, i don't think it correctly turned off.

My battery would be almost gone after 3 hours of not using it at all and it would be warm to touch.

Resetting does not work.

Restoring the phone through iTunes fixed it completely. Having to do that sux, but the restore truly gets your phone installation back to where it should be.

can someone post my reply to those other sites. i am not a member. I really think a restore will solve this problem.

I upgraded from 2.0 to 2.1 and the batter works really well.. My phone is V1.

This sounds like the problem is your battery gauge is just incorrect. Your phone isn't really dropping that much juice that fast, your gauge is just acting erratically because it's out of sync. Let the phone go until it shuts itself off from lack of juice, then charge it FULLY WITHOUT USING IT from the AC ADAPTOR. Once you do that, let us know how battery performance seems.

Since I've been on 2.1 my battery performance seems to be improved. Also talking in an area that gave my 3G BlackJack and the pre-2.1 iPhone reception problems didn't seem to be an issue today. So thus far I am happy.

I think I'm getting much better performance after restoring a clean 2.1

Currently I'm at:

1 Hour, 44 minutes usage
3 Hours, 13 minutes standby.

Push on (for MobileMe and Exchange) as well as 3G and Bluetooth on.

I'm still showing about 80%+ in the meter (no more numeric battery meter)

Try what I did.
1)back up the phone
2)delete your current ipsw file for 2.1
3)connect to iTunes and select restore. re-download and install.
4)restore your backup
5)sync all your music and apps back on

I just did this last night, and so far, everything seems MUCH better than the previous 2 times I updated (the first time with the first download, and the second time with the first download.)
Currently, standby is 6 hours and 12 minutes. Usage is 39 minutes, 1 minute call, and downloaded only 472kb of data over edge.
That 39 minutes of usage includes playing Billy Frontier for about 20 minutes total now.
Battery meter hasn't moved yet. Won't know for certain till tonight, but I'll keep you posted.
I can also say that all the apps seem more stable and open slightly faster than before. And the keyboard is pretty quick to come up now.

Well I still think mine sucks. Here is my usage stats when I got the 20% warning today

I was at the Apple Store today. They told me to turn Push ON, but switch Fetch to Manual rather than 15 mins (I have 3 email accounts.. Exchange, MobileMe, and my home IMAP - 2 of them are push, 1 is not)

I'm gonna test tomorrow with this setting, along with 3G, Location, and Bluetooth on. See what I get.
