Go into settings then mail and see if push is on. It is a huge battery drain and I know keep it off and my phone will last all day messing with it most of the day. Hope this helps

Because it's new the battery might need a little stirring up of electrons. Let it go from 100% to 0%. If that doesn't work play with it for a few days and if it still isn't up to par with expectations (about 6.5 hours) then return it.

I let it go down to like 10% I have brightness down to around 40% I so far started at 9 I checked a few emails read some news on engadget tracked a package with ups app looked online for about 10 mins maybe less played 3 levels of angry birds I know it sounds like a lot but on reality I haven't played any videos or music so from 9 am now it's 12:20 and I have 61% battery life so am I ok or should I be freaking out

From my personal opinion, the iPhone battery sucks as compared to my older phones. I upgraded from a Motorola Backflip to the iPhone 4, and I was quite freaked out at first upon learning that the iPhone drains battery quite fast. Maybe it's your previous phone charging behavior that's making your freak out?

IloveiPhones theory is also correct, though I wouldn't say 'stirring' is. :p

Average iPhone usage is up to 8 hours as according to the iPhone usage counter.

Start charging your iPhone as soon as you read this. Let it go up to 100%. then let it get down to 3%. Then go to settings>General>Usage. Then check to see how much usage and stand-by there has been. Then report here. Try to make note of anything you do and for how long. But it's not needed. It's hard to tell right now if it's rotten.

What's the usage at? A few people have already asked you but you're just letting us know what you've been playing and reading. Who cares? What matters is how long the screen has been on, or in use. Also, compare usage to standby. I have Usage of 3hrs 8 min and standby of 17hours 10 min and still have 51% left. I know a couple of times my usage and standby are exactly the same and my phone is about dead. I do a respring and its all good.

Don't worry about "electrons" and letting your phone die completely and recharge, thats horse poop

No it's not. While the phrase may not have been worded to people's liking it was GOOD advice. Even Apple recommends doing a complete charge cycle once per month. Letting it go to zero helps calibrate the metering. Sometimes the battery isn't really dead, the iPhone is just being too conservative with the amount remaining and a complete charge cycle and reboot while connected to power can calibrate it properly.

That said you shouldn't make a frequent habit of letting the battery drain to zero. Lithium based batteries do better with topping off.

If this were true, wouldn't it be noted on the packaging or instructions when you buy the phone? I have never seen this. Don't tell me a Apple store member told you this

yes that is what happened. An Apple store "member" told me. Sure.

From Apple:
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
http://www.apple.com/batteries/maximizing-performance/

Let's see... the guy said "stir" the electrons and to run it through a cycle. Looks like Apple said essentially the same thing.

When you say 8 hours; you mean 8 hours of actual on time?

So with the phone being on standby that means you can easily get 12-15 hours of the day as long as you aren't on it constantly?
