I'm sorry but that is a bunch of crap. It's horrible businesss on David Ashman's end. Even if he would've made a notice stating that the application now cost $4.99, that would have at least been better than a surprise.

That's way too shady. I'm going write him and e-mail and give me a piece of my mind. Screw him.

Kaba, I agree and already sent him one but he had no response, of course. Maybe if enough people email their displeasures he'll change it.

Thanks, I just sent it. Here is a copy of what I wrote him:

Hi David,

I'd just like to write you to say how shady your businesss practices
are. With your recent updates to Lockscreen Info (1.0.108 and above),
you've converted my completely free software into demoware by imposing
a Trail limit on it. That is completely ridiculous. You never gave the
EU warning that by upgrading they'll begin a trial and then charged
$4.99 for your application. You've lost a lot of respect as a
developer to me and I will make certain I broadcast on forums and
everywhere else what type of scheme you're trying to run, unless you
change it back to the way it was. I am aware you want compensation for
your work; however, to not give any forewarning is disrespectful to
your customers. I'd even be in favor of creating a free version and
paid version. I hope you can take my suggestions into consideration in
your future developments of Lockscreen Info. It's a great product and
I'd love to continue using it how I always have been.

Thank you for listening and I look forward to hearing from you.

Shane

Crupp,

That guide that Krunk posted is spot on and very easy to follow. If you want the whole theme without doing all the code tweaks, the writer has linked the modified Gruppled Lockscreen Info theme on page 3. Download that theme, but you will need to edit it to change your zip code for the weather as shown on page 1.

One more thing, if after applying the theme, the mail, SMS etch show zero, don't forget to go into settings, Lockscreen scroll down to those categoties and go in and enable them.

I agree that he could have stated up front that the app would soon be a paid app, but I can understand a developer wanted to profit from his work, as long as he keeps updating the program. The app is good and customizable and I've paid more for crappier apps.

I feel the same way.

I haven't updated to the latest though because he was going through so many revisions that broke things.

I just removed his repositories and will buy his app through cydia once it goes commercial through that route.

OK, he actually wrote back to my e-mail. Here is what he said:

Shane,

The "free" application you've been using has been a beta, as evidenced
by the source that the application is loaded from (http://david.ashman.com/BETA
) and the forum that ran the beta clearly stated that it was a work in
progress that would eventually become a pay application. The fact
that you picked up the app from some other unauthorized forum that
talked about it and didn't reference the true progress of the app is
not my fault. Now that the application has reached a stable state for
release, I've begun charging for licenses.

I'm sorry you feel that this is "shady" but it's not unusual for beta
software to be free to work out the kinks and then become a commercial
product once complete.

thanks
dave
I'm not sure what "unauthorized forum" he is referencing, but whatever. That's what he gave me...

Seems like he has an ego problem. Is anyone else having the issue of the calendar not collapsing by default when changed in the settings and the sorting not working or is it just me?

Here is an interesting blog post about someone who "worked" with Dave Ashman.

Looks like we are not the only one's that are upset he didn't not the price change in his upgrade.

Looks like I will not be purchasing this add on to my phone. It lags pretty good and is slow to update if I have a new email, sms, or call. The weather sometimes doesn't show up and I have to do a reset to get it working again. This happens several times a day. Sometimes I will check all my email messages and there aren't anymore new ones but they still show as new on my lockscreen for some time. Not worth the money to me at this point.

I know a lot of ppl are irked over the charging of Lockinfo and I was too at first, i'm not in the best of financial positions at the moment. But, I would say compared to Intelliscreen, this is a superior product and cheaper.

Some ppl have quoted the "hackthatphone" site and it is great. I went through those 3 pages the first week i got my iPhone and lockinfo. I couldn't stand how the lockscreen from Apple told you NOTHING. It was very easy to program the gruppled theme and I still use that with lockinfo as the base.

I tried the lockinfo background too but I found the fonts too big and I needed to see a full monthly calendar. Anyways, I went back to gruppled and it works fine and is fast. David Ashman was nice enough to email me programs I could try that would add onto his lockinfo screen and give me the monthly calendar but I figured since I programmed this the way I wanted, I would keep using that. But that was nice of the guy.

Anyways, I just wanted to post something in David's favor because I believe that this is a superior product and 4.99 isn't too much even though it was a surprise. After 4 days of mulling it over and trying to find a free replacement or something better, I realized it was the best and easiest to manipulate. In the end, I think what he did surprised us but is very fair. We love free stuff but it is a great piece of intellectual property that he developed.

That's all i wanted to say whether you agree or disagree.

Thanks nyhunter. I like intelliscreen because I can have 2 lockscreens. On the main one I have a scrolling calendar and 7 day weather forcast while on my second one I have college and pro football scores and email. Works for me but to each his own.

But once lockscreen info expires (trial) gruppled will no longer work....you need lockscreen for gruppled
