I want to get the iPhone but im not currently able to upgrade my phone on my AT&T plan (i already did it a couple months ago). if i buy a new line, AT&T said i have 14 days to cancel the contract without penalty and i can keep the phone if i want. if i keep the phone can i import my current number on the phone, thus avoiding the contract upgrade problem?

I have good news for you my friend, I, just like you, upgraded and signed a new contract only 45 days prior to purchasing the iPhone. Doesn't matter what type of phone you have or when you signed your last agreement. Buy the phone (do not activate in store) and plug it into your iTunes and choose the option that you are a current customer. Enter in your current At&t phone number and you are off and running. You have to sign a new 2 year agreement, but if you just did that a few months ago it shouldn't be a big deal.
I was also in your shoes and thought that I would not be eligible. I even called and spoke with a rep at the local At&t store and he told me I was ineligible. Thank goodness I wondered upon the good people of this forum who steered me in the right direction.
