How To Put DVDs on the iPhone: A handy tutorial created by Phillip Torone at Hackszine.

HandBrake is a GPL'd multi-platform, multithreaded DVD to MPEG-4 ripper/converter - it's super easy to rip the DVDs you have and put them on the new iPhone - they look great and are about 1 GB each, here's how... First, get HandBrake - Link. There are also PC versions of HandBrake, it might work about the same way.

Install it, run it. Pop the DVD in. Pick the DVD volume. Choose your settings, I use the defaults usually.

It takes about 30 min or so, it runs fine in the background.

Drag the MP4 file it makes in to iTunes, in videos tab in iTunes for the iPhone select the movie, click Sync.

The video is in the videos section. iPod / Videos.

It looks and sounds great!

NOTE: This is intended only for personal use with your purchased DVD's and not for the commercial distribution.

One addendum. If you are converting TV shows, then you might want to convert each episode. Otherwise, it could get unruly to track down episodes.

Okay, I'm trying Handbrake on a Windows XP. I'm having trouble under "Destination". It allows me to browse for the folder, but I can't select it. I'm not really good with computers, but if someone could help me, I'd appreciate it.

What program are all you mac users using to convert already downloaded movies to iPhone?

I have handbrake, but it won't convert .avi files, which I already have about 30 movies, to the correct codec.. It just rips, or converts already downloaded movies..

What specific files does it do?

30 minutes, eh? Perhaps it takes 30 minutes on a dual-core G5 cheese grater.

On my lowly G4 QuickSilver, one can expect to loiter about for an hour and a half for a one-hour DVD file.

Is there something faster for us Mac types?

.....sT
You're pretty much stuffed I'm afraid.

There's a physical limit on how fast you can read the DVD, and then process the data.

No software is going to help with that problem :(
