You must mean INTERNAL speaker right? Anyway I did that and it did not make the alert tones any louder.
Yes, internal speaker. That just "turns the speaker's volume knob" all the way up... Which is still weak. I'm going to edit a ringtone volume in iTunes like someone posted already when I get a chance... It works on my iPods so it should work the same for the phone
I made this Garage Band ring even louder by using an audio editor (like Fission) and normalizing it, making sure that the maximum level is reached without, of course, reaching the distortion level. This is my "must-hear-this-phone-ring" ring tone

Unfortunately it appeared that the only way to use it was to hack the iPhone (which I refuse to do); or use other Mac software like iToner. Then I ran across something very simple...rename the extension to AAC then M4R then double-click the M4R and presto it appears as a ringtone in iTunes. Sadly this was disabled by an iPhone update. Then apparently re-enabled in 1.1.2. Anyway, it works today.

For those who want a really loud ring tone and has a Mac, you can find it at Library>Audio>Apple Loops>Apple>iLife Sound Effects>Work-Home>Cell Phone Ringing.
I imported this audio file to iTunes as mp3, dragged it to iFuntastic v.3 Ringtone page and voila! This ring is super loud (sounds almost like the ring tone used in the iPhone commercials). I heard it even while shopping at Abercrombie and Fitch! Hope it works for you
Try the package called "SendSong" from the Installer. You need to convert this file to m4a in order for this to work with as a ringtone. Before installing, click the "More Info" on the bottom of the Package page so that you'll know what you're dealing with. Good luck!
Seems like I am making a career out of providing the link for this solution. I have a v1.2 phone unlocked and it worked for me. Easy to use also. It makes everything louder then you can control the volume with the controls supplied.

I am still hopeful that Apple will open up on ringtones; especially there own like "Cell Phone Ringing". We can not hack ours.

I know this is hard to believe but I did it yesterday and it worked amazingly well... In front of the speaker there is a dust cover that restricts the sound... I have heard of people saying they just poked through it using a needle poking through the little speaker grill holes, I am not that cavelier though... I removed the antenna cover (the black part on the back) and peeled the dust cover off (its not glued there very well) and now my iPhone outpreforms my buddy's SYNC by a lot as far as volume. I would say it is at least twice as loud.

When you took the cover off and put it on does it have marks. They say Apple will void your warranty when you do that.
