I live in NJ, but my friend typed in his home address, which is in Long Island, into my google maps. I was home today and typed in Sushi and it gave me sushi restaurants in Long Island. I was also in manhattan later and the same thing happened. Is there a way to set the phone to know where you are and give you results accordingly?

If I'm searching for Starbucks in Atlanta, first I type "Atlanta, GA" then it zooms in on Atlanta, then I type "Starbucks" and it pinpoints Starbucks in Atlanta.

The format is the same as google maps.

"Sushi near Manhattan, NY" or
"Sushi near 90210" or
"Sushi near 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, Washington, DC"

You can cheat, and iPhone Maps will guess what location you wanted if you just give it a search term.

If you type just "Sushi" iPhone Maps will guess this means "Sushi near <the last location I was at in maps>".

So, you either have to give it what you want to find, and where you want to find it, or navigate to where you want it to start searching, and then give it a term.
