so, i got my iPhone today, synced with my gmail and everything was working great, until...

all of the sudden, without changing any settings, i kept getting the message, "message has not been downloaded from server" when trying to view messages that i had read earlier. i get this message only when trying to view messages that have attachments, like my iPhone receipt email. i was able to view all of these messages earlier in the day and now it doesn't work.

i tried playing around my settings on the iPhone but nothing worked. currently they are set to:

deleted messages: remove after one week

incoming uses ssl: on
outgoing uses ssl: on
authentication: password
delete from server: never
use recent mode: off

i typed "message has not been downloaded from server" into google and there is a thread on Apple discussions:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5132123

however, no one on that thread has an answer.

do any of the iPhone "experts" :) here have any idea of a fix for this or am i screwed until Apple fixes the bug on the next software update?

does anyone know of a solution?

thanks in advance.

I just help my mom fix this on her iPhone. Basically...follow these steps:

1.) Delete the account and re-add it, sometimes this works

If it does not work,

2.) Soft reset the phone by holding the home button and sleep button at the same time till the screen turns black with the Apple logo.

Finally, if this does not work, turn recent mode back on.

I know this sucks, because your emails will be resent to yourself, but this was the one that worked for my mom's phone.

After turning recent mode on, this message has yet to be seen.

Hope this helps.

thanks. That seemed to do the trick, oddly enough. Only problem was after I restartes gmail it kept loading all the old emails even though I set it to only to pop emails from now on. Seems as if Apple and google still need to work things out.

What the heck is "recent mode" and how do you get there?

Be careful if you are adding and deleting a Yahoo account. It will create a duplicate link and you will have issues until you dig into your Yahoo account and remove the duplicate links.
