I had a similar problem where my mic and mic buttons were no longer working. At first I didn't realize the mic itself wasn't working, because people I was talking to were hearing me through the iPhone's internal mic. They'd complain of loud noise when I'd slip the phone into my pocket...

The problem was resolved once I dug out a huge wad of pocket lint that was preventing the plug from seating fully.

Damn, I'd given up on my headphone button a long time ago, but I just pulled an entire dust bunny out of my headphone jack!

Right up there with the paperclip through the speaker hole trick on the V1.
Used the paper clip and worked like a treat! BRILL THANKS!:eek:k:eek:k

Grrrr...just made a trip to the Apple store, after a minute with someone that thought they only came with a 14 day warranty (clueless) they called someone else that finally came up and swapped them out. They sounded like they had a stock of them in the back for just this case.

Unfortunately, when I plugged them in, they didn't work, so I spent the drive home really ticked off that I just wasted an hour and the problem was the phone. What a drag. It really kept eating at me because it's just a headphone jack after all, these connectors have been in existince forever, it just can't be that flaky. So I stuck a paperclip down there and started digging around and what do you know, a piece of lint came out. That's it, a piece of lint. Plugged the headphones in and bingo, they work perfectly.

What should have clued me in originally was the headphone connector wasn't plugging is flush to the phone. I never really noticed it before, but I will from now on.
THANK YOU! I've been searching around for a solution to this exact same problem -- and I guess I probably should have thought about fishing around for lint or something in there, but never did. Works perfectly now. Now, if I only could figure out a way to return these Klipsch earbuds that I thought might fix this but didn't...

I had this exact problem on my old 3G. I just brushed it off and stopped using the crap headphones that Apple ships with their devices. Anyway, sorry to thread hijack but it sounds like people here are using aftermarket headphones with mics. I'd really like a pair of over the ear headphones with an in line mic and if one of u could pm me with what you use that would be awesome! The in ear ones always hurt my ears even after just a couple minutes of use.

Lint in jack

Same here, I'll save you the picture of the lint ball but it was about the size a bb gun pellet.

Thanks for the tip!

Technology cannot be trusted forever, there is always a room for improvement and there is always some space for malfunctions. The mic seems to be quite a headache for me as well. What is the solution? Does anyone knows?
