My iPhone thinks its docked

I'm having a weird problem where my iPhone (4s) thinks that its in a dock, and wont play sound through the speakers. Ive had a similar problem before, but here's the weird part, when i connect to an actual dock, it plays normally, its like its reversed.

just to make it clear, the dock i am using is the Apple dock with the headphone connector in the back.

any fixes?

Have you tried a hard reset? Hold down both the home and power buttons until the Apple logo appears then release. If that doesn't work you might need to restore.

Have you tried putting a headphone jack in and out a few times. Quite common for the micro switch in the headphone port to get stuck.
